Can I grow common myrtle in England?

Before the winter, I got some twigs of common myrtle, which looked and smelt lovely. I decided to have a go at growing them, and so stuck them in a pot of potting mixture, which has been sitting on our bathroom windowsill (as much for want of anywhere better!) since then. The leaves have all turned brown and dropped off, and the twigs don't look very alive. I know this isn't necessarily a sign of death, but they don't seem to be doing anything.

I pulled a couple up, but couldn't see any roots.

Do I have any chance of growing them? I've done similar things with other twigs before, and had reasonable success. In our old house we had some willow trees that were grown from twigs collected on an outing.

Any advice? I did a search, and it looks like I did the right thing, but I don't see any signs of life. Thanks
