galley kitchen...w/ island as 1 side
Comments (3)We have a galley layout with an island and love it. Congestion isn't a problem, although I'm the only one using the kitchen most of the time. Having it open to the rest of the house keeps me from feeling isolated from the rest of the action when I'm cooking. Our house is very small, so the aisle clearances aren't as wide as is often recommended here, but it works fine (4' sounds very roomy!). I love that I'm no more than a few steps away from anything I need. The original kitchen was 19' by 7'. We knocked out the wall between the kitchen and DR. The island extends into the DR....See MoreFeedback on teeny galley modern kitchen plan
Comments (25)The 30" Ikea cabinet is shown in displays and on the ikea site as if it all came as a kit, with two wide deep drawers, and two shallow narrow drawers on top. Everything you get from Ikea is a separate piece. Good to know: you can get a single shallow drawer, full width. This replaces the two narrow drawers that require two front panels and a Filler piece. This is less time to install and less cost to buy. You simply deselect the small drawers, small front panels, and filler piece. Since it's not a kit, you don't have to buy the ensemble and or ask for exceptions to get parts replaced. Here is the shallow drawer: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10107072 $30 . It's been documented on ikeafans extensively, as the "oven drawer" in the base cabinet. If you have the urge to say you prefer having two small drawers, think again. -- When I went to a Viking showroom and looked at a 24" wide range, I was told it was discontinued. I didn't ask if they meant the one model I was looking at or all the 24" models. If the latter, I think there will still be many available at a discount price. A smaller oven takes less time to warm up. We have a 24"wide wall oven. We are very happy with it. In it we can fit a huge roaster: it's an oval shape, 13"w by 17.75" long with handles in "corners" not at the ends, about 7.5" high. I could fit fair size animals in it but I don't know what size that would be in turkey pound speak, specifically. We have a 24" induction cooktop. We never use four burners. In fact, we could make do with one burner almost all the time, by using pots with strainers, bain-marie tops, double boilers, etc. So now we understand why a three-burner cooktop can be sold without generating any complaints. -- Having one fridge will do the job. A fridge/freezer, all by itself. Having two appliances will change your life. The small LG is high quality at a good price. hth...See MoreKitchen with island design in unusual space
Comments (18)First, the pictured design has eat-in seating and so options that optimize the space by eliminating the seating seem defective, unless you have heard from the OP that the seating is not required. Of course, you are going to be able to get a better kitchen if you don't bother having a place for people to sit and eat... Next, the walkway is too wide to be comfortable and is a waste of space in a traditional galley. After cabinets you will approach 6' walkway between counters. You need a walkway that is somewhere between 1060 and 1220 mm, more than that and it is going to be slightly uncomfortable and wasteful. That means your cabinet depth for optimal use of space would be 870 mm, which is much larger than the standard 635 mm. I don't know that there is an effective way to address that, but it is what you have. ---------- Here is an option that will give you three tight seats, it is certainly not optimal but could work. or or...See MoreRemodeling old double galley to new open plan, please help
Comments (9)If your mom is insistent on a cooktop in a peninsula/island/pass-through, she should be aware that that means a hood hanging down from the ceiling in the middle of the room (or pass-through). It will also mean more expensive venting b/c of the need for a larger hood and a stronger fan than you would need if against the wall, as well as a finished surface on all sides. The larger & stronger hood is b/c there are more and stronger air currents in an open space like a peninsula/island/pass-through. The hood will need to be at least 6" wider than the cooktop (more would be better) and 27" deep. 660cfm to 900cfm are probably needed, more if she does high-heat/smoke cooking or grilling inside. [Please don't say downdraft or no hood -- especially in an open space. Fumes, odors, grease, steam, & smoke (FOGSS) travel very far if they are not expelled from the home with adequate ventilation. Downdrafts are mostly useless and no hood is, well, no ventilation at all. In addition, with gas, a downdraft will interfere with the flame of the burners and, potentially, "blow out" the flame.]...See MoreLinda Mayo
