First Year Plum Pruning
Comments (1)Goodground, the first select buds were eaten and new buds are sprouting anywhere. The tree has only so much energy stored so you want to remove those close to the ground asap. The top bud will be the strongest grower. Growth hormones go to the tips. After the branch has grown a few inches clip a wooden clothes pin above the 4-5 new select branches to train 'open vase'. Stick tie new branches so the don't flop over in a thunderstorm. Retard long green branches by removing the tip. Hormones will go to lower branches and also form new side branches where the tips were removed. Branch growth hormones come from the roots and root growth hormones come from the leaves. BR planted 1 yr. Superior with plums in footies and tanglefoot wrapping to deter squirrels. Squirrels climb into tanglefoot, flip off the tree and run in horror. Works good in a small tree instead of nets....See MoreFirst Year Pruning for Type II Clematis
Comments (13)Yes! Winter is coming soon. It has already been in the 30's at night and we have had frost two nights already - YUCK - not ready for the white stuff yet. My hydrangea has been planted in the same area for a few years now, but I remember when I first got it I watered it more. Now it seems if I water it more than twice a week it gets mad at me! Thanks everyone for the information on my clematis. So I will wait until spring to prune them. Now when I prune them do I cut everything back? I'm not used to having to prune my flowers and am afraid I might chop them too much :). Do I cut all the branches coming off from the main stem or just cut back the main stem? Again, thanks for all the great information!! Kim...See MoreBlueberry to prune or enjoy first year fruit update
Comments (4)I have to admit though that I was surprised by the amount of fruit on the plants this year. I would guess that the plants that were allowed to fruit their first year have 75% as many flowers the plants that were not allowed to fruit. I would have bet the % would be much less....See MoreEspalier apple first-year pruning
Comments (0)Hello, I planted two apple whips that I intend to train as tiered cordons. I tended to the apple trees at my parents house when I was growing up, but these are the first apple trees I've planted myself. I cut the whips back to just above a bud at the height of the first tier, and a few months later I have lots of good branch and leaf growth. On both whips, I've ended up with four buds turning into branches, when I only need three. I'm also getting some small leaves emerging from buds lower down the "trunk". Should I prune off those extra leaves and branches this summer? Or should I wait next winter? I am in Chicago, if that makes any difference. Thanks for your help!...See Moreeri54
