Replacing whole window vs replacement windows
Comments (3)Our home was built in 2001. We used Marvin Integrity windows throughout, except for three 12' wide patio sliders. Those are the high end Marvin. I would not buy Marvin windows again. We need to replace those sliders and I'm starting to look around. Friends of ours had a factory built home, called a Wick Home, made by a housing manufacturer in the '70's out of Mazomanie, WI. They had to replace windows and were getting all these very expensive bids because none of their windows were standard sizes. The wife is from Monroe, WI area, where there is an Amish community. They redid their windows with the Amish for a very large savings. She had to go and pick them up and take them home for 3 days, while they did the work but it was about 15,000$ cheaper than the other quotes they were getting. I'm also going to look into that. I haven't been happy with our windows. They get mold and peel paint along the inside casement frame, the big patio doors ice up in the winter along the bottom. The weatherstripping is brittle and breaks off in huge runs. The glass is cold in the winter and I don't think it reflects enough heat in the summer. We had 2 seals break. The Marvin rep came and they covered one, we are working on the other now. But we had to pay for the labor to uninstall the old one and put the new one in. It was at that point they learned that our patio fixed door was assembled backwards. Meaning the outside part of the glass was supposed to be inside. I just think all of this is enough to advise avoiding Marvin....See MoreNeed advice re: replacement windows - is "glue and screw" method ok?
Comments (3)The second guy might be using a scare tactic, hard to say. Replacement windows leave both the interior and exterior trim in tact unless there is actual wood rot (not chipped paint). installing a replacement window into the existing window frame and using a good interior and exterior sealant along with foam insulation is tried and true method we all use. Of course, if there is existing wood exterior casing, we cap with aluminum. what brand of window was quoted?...See MoreReplacement window advice??

He'll no doubt know the local suppliers instead of just going to a big box store. I'm in the northeast and had 11 windows replaced for about a 1/3 of what Renewal quoted (even with their "must sign now!" discount). This was after listening to ~3 hours worth of sales pitch stuck in my own kitchen. Don't like their sales/marketing style at all. I think the Andersen product is an ok product. A neighbor is a retired contractor and he arranged for a couple of guys to come in and install our replacement widows. I went with Harvey Classic vinyl windows. Windows were custom built to measurements by our contractor so there wasn't a lot of shimming/adjustment for the install. Our house is not super high end and I didn't want to spend the premium for wood interior/vinyl clad exterior windows. Harveys are double pane/E-glass. Have screend and tilt for easy cleaning. I replaced a slider also but opted for an Andersen unit because I don't like vinyl frames on panes as big as a sliding door. 11 Windows were installed in a day. Very happy with the result....See MoreFront House Window Replacement Advice
Comments (3)IMo those were rot waiting to happen . Replacing thme with no jut out is a bit tricky from what I can see so you will need to get some idea of what is involved I am wondering how that front entry stays dry ? I have to admit the windows as they are in design add something to the house so maybe all metal windows custom made could be the answer or at least really good aluminaum wrap and some much better way to handle the water off the roof...See Moremillworkman
