What would you do with this mantel for christmas decorating?
Comments (21)It's a great space, though challenging. My suggestion would be to add something with height, to break up all those horizontal lines. How 'bout cutting some branches and spraying them white or gold and putting them in a vase near one end? You could wrap them with small lights for even more impact--just be sure to try to match the wire color to the branches. Watch the sales and maybe pick up one or two LARGE items, like the nutcrackers others have mentioned. You don't necessarily need a lot of items, but you need drama and impact and height. Two large, graduated nutcrackers (or snowmen or Santa's, you get the idea) near one end would have a lot of impact. Other thoughts: have you experimented hanging the wreath separately from the mirror? Can the mirror stand vertically instead of horizontally? You want to break up those long horizontal lines. Or maybe hang large ornaments from the ceiling against the wall, varying the lengths of the ribbons. Take a look at well-decorated stores or malls, that's a good place to get inspiration. Great job on the staircase!...See Morewhat size picture is best for hanging above mantel?
Comments (1)i like as large as possible and not hung too high, kind of the size where you still have room on either side to put vases or whatever. I know there must be a rule of thumb but no clue what it is. Just a balance of size in proportion to the mantel length. as far as type. Sometimes a grouping of photos that might be black and white is cool too. I cant quite remember your PP, but I do remember the clock for some reason and agree it was lost there, no offense, but boy am I envious you have a fireplace in your BR....See MoreWhat would you do with this mantel?
Comments (24)What a pretty house! I see that there are some kiddos in the picture. Here's an idea that may not be your cup of tea at all, but I'll mention it in case it sounds like fun. Buy a huge blank canvas at an art supply store. Gather small rollers and large brushes; leftover house paints (not oil based) and a few small mis-mixed paints from the hardware store. Work over a tarp. Have the kids start by loosely making a few light meandering pencil lines that start on one edge and end somewhere on a different edge. Have at least one of these lines cross another. Use these to have them start blocking in areas of color. Take turns filling in areas, working loosely and trying different techniques with the brush, adding things (e.g. at the end, maybe a drizzle or splash of paint). Make sure the edges are painted as well. If you want a splash of one color, save that for last and don't over think it. If you start with a palette you like and approach it as just a fun experience it can really work. Of course you need a plan for what to do (do you have a garage?) if the outcome isn't quite what you'd hoped. A key here is not to let the kids do much mixing on the canvas itself to avoid colors getting too muddy. I've seen this done as a kindergarten classroom auction project and the results have ranged from spectacular to, um, not. Final disclaimerâ¦I realize that with a new house and the end of the holidays, this probably isn't what you had in mind. So onward to Homegoods!...See MoreHow would you decorate this mantel?
Comments (2)I would paint out the fireplace "hole" black, and paint your cabinet the same color so they visually disappear - do the same with the shelves. Lean a large painting on the mantle, centering it. Add pottery on the shelves - large pieces with similar colors (one per shelf if possible) to make a statement and reduce visual clutter. Take everything else off the mantel, and then post another picture to see if more if needed....See MoreIt's a Beautiful World!
