Need help on redoing front yard (long)

Hi! I am new to the Garden Forum. I joined Gardenweb when I was remodeling my kitchen and everyone was so nice and helpful! My kitchen is now done and I want to start working on my front yard and back yard. I live in a HOA community so I will need to get HOA approval for front yard redo. This picture shows the front yard when I bought this house a year ago. There is this huge tree got chopped off before the previous owner list the house but the root is still there (grey color thingy in the middle of the mulch area), I will need to have professional to remove that.

I don't like any of the current plants in my front yard right now. I want to eventually redo the whole thing. The plan is to get a tree and some shrubs. I know almost nothing about trees/flowers, but I love love love flowering cherry blossom tree. My previous home has some cherry tree in the front yard that was planted by the community but it has some tiny burgundy color fruit that drop which I don't like. Is there any flowering cherry blossom tree that doesn't have fruit? I also want one that is a dwarf version. I saw this picture online when I was google searching dwarf flowering cherry, does anyone know what it is? I live in the SF bay area, will the zone be good for this flowering cherry?

I also like the red/purple/burgundy color shrub that a house in my community has. What kind of shrub is it? The owner bought the house with this shrub already planted and they don't know what that is either.

The burgundy shrub is likely a cultivar of Japanese barberry. Quite invasive in many areas of the country. Where are you?

will cherry thrive in san fran???? i have often suggested.. peeps use pix of local things.. that inspire them ... it quickly answers what will grow in your area ... snap pix all summer long ... and get IDs here or in the name that plant forum ...

on some level ... you are trying to handle this like an interior remodel ... and that may be problematic ...

first... will you change the bed shape/design ... or will that remain static ...

second.. we should ID the 3 largest plants .. especially that green blob in the middle of the 3... we need to start with what we might call the backbones.. first with removal ... and second.. what to add back ... for the vertical aspect of the bed ... your multi level house is not going to look good with a flat garden ... and many of the larger potential backbone plants.... may have specific planting times .. rather than the ability to just slap them in anytime we want ...

also .. i see a purple plant on the left.. why would you want another???

will this be DIY ... will it be bigboxstore .. would you be willing to mail order???

is the other side of the driveway also yours.. and is there a duplicate large tree like shrub there .. meaning you might not want to remove one.. without the other ...

i am in MI ... i can not recommend plants for you ... you may as well be on the moon .. lol ... but i am addressing the base issues.. of how i would begin the process ...

one last look at the pic.. and that giant picture window ... i might come about half way out to the street.. and plant a tree .. so that in the future.. it would block the neighbors view .. directly thru what appears to be.. the whole house [or its a reflection of the peeps across the street ] ... i would not go any closer.. because i would want brightness in the house ... that might be a good spot.. for the cherry ...but also keep in mind.. sherry blooms for a few days ... maybe a week .. and then is otherwise a rather lackluster tree ...

well that ought to be enough to start defining your end product ..

Aw, I was just kinda teasing, I know that isn't really your thing, although I do believe you'd enjoy a small area dedicated to some rough and tumble succulents. The contrast alone might be especially delectable. As long as they completely dry between waterings, they'll do OK. Else not. The main issue with my scheme might be the patience required. It would be some long years (5-8) before the Yuccas reach a nice height along that wall. Take a look at the pics from GreekDesert at the link I've added. Denise, I was going to ask if anyone had any suggestions on what to put in the place of the Magnolia. I don't think there's any way I could talk my husband into taking it out, but I was trying to figure out what would look good there just in case I did. I think the variety of Magnolia is Little Gem so it's not supposed to get big like the regular Magnolia, but I agree that it kind of blocks the view. I'm really not much of a tree person, which is why I was glad to get rid of the trees on the middle tier. I like planting flowers and the trees cause too much shade sometime. I would love to fill that center spot with daylilies and other flowers. I've been trying to get hubby to let me take out the Yaupon by the front door and put something lower growing. I would actually like to take out all of the yaupons, but I can't make up my mind what I would want there instead. Looking at your inspiration photos, it seems that there are groundcover-like materials that can be grown there. I'm not familiar with what they might be so can't make recommendations. But it looks like a fairly lush look is available if one chooses the right material. Before doing any planting, I'd be considering if there is any possible way to widen the entrance walk, which is considerably undersized. The house would look more upscale with a much wider walk and you could probably eliminate one step in the process, making for an improved entry experience. I'd consider removing all of the raised edging. The beds it creates are much too tightly pinched to the house. A 5' to 6' minimum bed width would be more like it. In addition, the edge itself is so thin that it cheapens the overall look of the property. A masonry bed edge should be 8" wide, or wider, in order to be in scale with a house. If the edging didn't exist, it would be easy to place foundation plants where they should go. I find myself wishing the fence that encloses the back yard didn't come so close to the front entrance. By doing so, it messes up possible planting (the blank space between the windows is asking for a small tree) and generally looks a bit utilitarian so close to the front entrance. It would be nice if the back yard entrance could be framed with an arbor, but I don't know if that's possible with the way the architecture is laid out behind the fence. It would need to be explored. In the illustration I'm showing the types of plants that could go in certain locations. It's not means to be comprehensive. It's a start.

When trimming, keep in mind that this is a matched set of “bookends,” so they should be exact, mirror image duplicates of each other as much as possible. I would think of the trimming project as a challenge … as if you were involved in a manufacturing process making a machine project on a lathe or something along those lines. It would not be at all detrimental to use a tape measure to double check dimensions for matching throughout the process. I would rough out the shapes of both before fine tuning either. The place to begin is standing back well away from them trying to envision what they are to become. If the shrub needs to be moved a little left, right or forward, this is the time to notice it and account for the adjustments you’ll need to make in the cutting. It really barely matters where the plant roots are located. If you the shrub to be 4” to the right, “move” it there with the cutting process. It’s important to envision the finished product before cutting because there is a substantial part of them that won’t get any cutting at all. If you just charged up on them and started hacking away, there’s a good chance you’d cut some wrong parts off. Since the pair of shrubs are matched, the first cuts to make should determine the height. (To match the pair, follow a line on the siding of the house as a guide. Don’t measure from the ground.) Keep in mind that you do NOT want to cut at the place where you envision the limits of the finished product to be (the red line in picture.) There are three reasons for this. As soon as you finish cutting the plant it’s going to grow and if you cut it at the finished height, in a short time it will grow too large. The second reason is because, even though you tried hard to make it a perfect shape, it’s not going to end up as perfect as you’d hoped for. Later, when you need to trim and try to perfect it again, you will want to be cutting only in the newer, softer, easier-to-cut foliage, rather than in the hard, sticky, woody portion. If you don’t cut a little smaller in the first place, you’ll probably end up where the next cutting has to dip somewhere into the woody portion of the plant again. This is a royal pain. If you make the plant a little smaller to begin with, it gives you a “cushion” against having this happen. In general, I find that people have a strong resistance to cutting the plant smaller (the blue line in the picture.) But do yourself a favor and get over this. If you mistakenly cut this plant to a stub, in two years you’d barely remember your error because it would be pretty large again. In cutting it just 6” less than you want it to be, in two months you’ll barely remember or notice that you did that. The third reason you want to cut the plant a little smaller than the “finished product size” is because the more foliage you remove from the top portion of the plant, the greater it is that you expose the bottom portion (the part that is undercut and desperately needs to grow) to more light and an improved chance of quicker growth. Between the yellow line (which represents the ground plane) in the picture and the shrub, there is nothing at all to cut … until you get higher up to the blue line. At this cavity at the lower portion of the shrubs, all the foliage will be left untouched so it can continue to grow as quickly as possible. The goal is to keep the upper portions of the shrub trimmed so that it shades the lower portions the least as possible. Even if you want the shrubs to be larger than what I'm showing, for now you should trim them as I'm showing because you're in a corrective phase trying to regain the lost lower foliage. In your second-to-last picture, it shows how a subordinate, adjacent shrub has encroached on the Yew, which is clearly the more important shrub. The lesser shrub should be trimmed such that this doesn't happen.

ken, thanks for your reply! It's very helpful. I plan to hire a landscaping designer but I want to have a list of plants/trees that I want to make sure the landscape designer incorporates those in the design. Would this be an acceptable approach?

Here're some pictures of some flowering cherry in neighborhood, um...I think they are flowering cherry? But these are the ones that have those small fruits that drop all over the ground that I don't like. Are there ones that don't drop fruits?

These were taken last month, all flowers fell down and they now have burgundy leaves. I also like hydrangea and peony that my friend has.

I don't like the purple plant on the left, those have big shiny oval purple leaves which I don't like. So I will remove that. We plan to paint the house exterior after the rain season to a light to medium gray color, so I want to have some pink tree or purple shrubs to add some color. I want some green shrubs too but I am leaving that to the landscape designer for suggestion.

There are two identical large trees on the other side of the driveway, I own one of them and the other one is my neighbor. I plan to remove mine. The low shrubs on the other side of the driveway are mine, they are very coarse and I want to remove those as well. Thinking to have some hydrangea there.

I really like your idea of planting a tree halfway to the street from the windows. I will have curtains there (I have those temporary paper shades now) but would love to be look out to a beautiful tree. I would only open the curtains when I am home and I am at a very quiet neighborhood, very few cars and very few people walk by the community except the neighbors walking their dogs.
