New to clematis need some advice please?!

Hey guys I planted my very first clematis this year (6) . I bought them in a bag from Walmart as plugs? Or roots? ... They're in the ground now but still very , very young and small. I have 2 Nike Warsaw and 4 H. R young (or H. G. Young ). I planted them behind my hybrid tea roses in my rose garden. I read online that if a clematis doesn't have a trellis to climb on it will stop growing basically so I think it's time to make some support for them to climb up. Any ideas? Anyone?? ... I'm thinking of Using fishing line maybe?? Or something similar that's hard to see. Theyre planted against the wall of my house and Bc there's 6 of them I do want the supports to match or not be noticeable at all. They are spaced out on each side of my climbing rose, prosperity. I want it to look natural and the rose isn't big enough yet for the vines to climb through Bc i just recently planted it..., any advice would be awesome!! It's late right now but I will post pics tomorrow to help. Thanks

Not sure of your source but clematis do NOT stop growing without a trellis or other support system - they either create their own (sprawling up though other plants or any other vertical structure) or they act as low spreading groundcovers.

But if you want vertical growth, providing some sort of climbing support is advised. Fishing line is a great idea - it is virtually invisible - but make sure whatever you use to attach the fishing line allows some distance/air space between the wall and the vine. This will allow for proper air circulation (reducing disease issues) and keep any wet foliage away from the side of the house.

You can also get rebar for cheap from a hardware store and make teepee trellises. Here is a discussion from the antique rose forum that shows a few different ones: http://forums.gardenweb.com/discussions/1582417/rebar-arbors-tripods?n=8

I am planning on making a few of these this spring. Cheap, easy, and sturdy.

sjp, looks like you did good as far as pruning the plant back. It should develop side shoots in a few weeks although it looks like it already is in your pictures. Clematis do not respond immediately to trimming back and if you potted it up, it is getting settled in its new home and that is what your clematis is doing. Do not expect tons of growth as it is getting settled in. What size pot was the original plant in before you transplanted it into its current pot? How well developed was the root system on the original plant? I am not familiar with what size plants that vendor sends out.

I just moved into a new remodel in Dec. with a 30" GE Profile Induction cooktop and the GE Advantium 120 Oven stacked above the GE Convection oven. I couldn't be happier with my choices. I LOVE the induction for its: 1.)speed 2.)responsiveness (when I have a full boil going and turn it down to a simmer - it stops boiling immediately - my friends with gas are amazed) 3.)ease of cleaning (nothing burns on it, because the top is only as hot as from the heat that came from the pan) I LOVE my Advantium as it performs as a microwave, convection oven and a warming drawer. I've used all three often and just love it. The convection oven function bakes beautifully (muffins, cinnamon rolls, pizza, cookies, etc.) and is quicker to heat up and less heat in the kitchen. And the warming function is great,too. I've left a slice of pizza in there for my teen for 25 minutes, it was perfect! At Christmas I was able to do the turkey in the oven and the green bean casserole and sweet potatoes both in the Advantium on the stacking tray at the same time - worked great! So, all in all I'm very please with my selection and I think you will find pretty good reviews on these items as well. Good Luck!

Read the appliance forum as well as this one - and I would advise you to shop at local independent dealers, NOT at home improvement centers or chain stores. You are more likely to get honest opinions from the small businesses who have a stake in your repeat business and word-of-mouth than from some salesperson who is touting the brand/item with this week's highest commission. And believe me - there are incentive lists that come out every week. Read the reviews on epinions, read applianceadvisor.com and ask, ask, ask. In the end, you'll narrow it down: it took me a year and I ended up with nothing I started out wanting, except for the KitchenAid dw - which was based only on my past experience with KA and my daughter's good experience with hers for the last 3 years.

It doesn't look okay to me. The leaflets seem to have curled which can happen with too little water. But that doesn't necessarily mean it's had too little water in the pot, it could also be damaged root system. Damage roots could also be if where you bought it they had recently repotted it. Do you know if it got very cold at some stage? It can be difficult isolating the problem as there could be a number of reasons. Using a wooden skewer to push down into the potting medium can show if there is enough moisture deeper down. If the skewer comes out clean it'll be too dry. If it's wet down there you'll see that when you pull out the skewer. Other than that, as palmsandsnow said, you just might have to wait a few weeks to see.

I have found for Clematis, having some wires horizontally between the legs or spiraling up the tripod helps give them more places to grab unless the tripod is also being used for a rose as in the link Michaela gave above. Just having the three legs and no other place for the clematis to grip means that I end up with more sprawling stems.

I have been to a display garden where they had made rebar "ladders" by welding cross pieces between two vertical pieces. Their Clematis completely covered them and looked fabulous.
