What ground cover do you put around your strawberry plants?
Comments (6)It was recommended to me to mulch with pine needles over the plants in winter. They protected well, allowing moisture through but not rotting the crowns. I have just pushed them aside and it seems they will be good there also. 'Course I've only seen maybe 5 slugs here in Colorado, so maybe I don't have a good handle on the problem....See MoreWhat do you do when you're ready to thin your collection?
Comments (3)I do give away the common whites/yellows or the varieties that have been given to me, but I have other varieties (Gulf Stream, Hilo Beauty, Moragne #23, Vera Cruz Rose, Cancun Pink, Pu'u Kahea, Brea (not well known, from Jack Morgan), Kamiyama Rainbow, Plastic Pink, Nebel's Rainbow and on and on and on....) that I paid for as cuttings from mostly reputable and a few shady places. I run up quite the bill every spring with new plants and all the fertilizers that the plants need...DH hasn't said anything yet, but if our roles were reversed I would put the kibosh to the plumeria habit if I saw the bills coming in and stuff going out for free! Fortunately I sold a few bigger trees and that gave me the go ahead to bring in some more cuttings. :-) chuy, email me and let me know what you're looking for, I'm in North OC....See MoreWhat floor covering do you have over your radiant heat?
Comments (8)We used an epoxy paint with the paint flecks so as to resemble terrazzo over our radiant heated shop floor that we put in. Ourselves. Embedded in the slab. We wanted the best transfer of heat possible for a building containing tonnages of steel machines and automobiles. Do research thermal lag. It's one big drawback. One thing that the engineer obsessor other half researched to death was that the floor covering materials and home layout will determine the loop spacing, length, and how many zones you will need. A system designed for wood will need to have a different temperature than one for concrete or tile, which are more efficient at radiating the heat. There isn't a one size fits all solution. But be SURE that your system designer and your engineered wood floor manufacturer are in synch with the requirements....See MoreShould I cover pips?
Comments (13)I have a similar question- I just received 2 hosta that I assumed would be bare root, but are instead potted up in 4” nursery pots. We still have several weeks of below freezing temps here in Zone 5B. If I plant them now, the leaves are definitely going to die back (which is ok) but would the roots perish also (given the plants are not acclimated or established)? Thinking these guys will need to stay houseplants for the next 3 weeks+.......See Morekoffman99
