Win 8.1 and 10 compatibility mode?

Yesterday my Asus Zenbook upgraded from Win 8.1 to 10. This laptop is basically new. It is an I7 with 12 gigs of ram and a 4k touchscreen. The only software I've installed that works is Firefox. Nothing else has been installed.

Today I installed and then uninstalled Wordperfect X7 Legal Suite. I uninstalled it because the fonts and icons it uses in it's toolbar are so small you can't read them or make out what they are. I tried changing the screen resolution but it has no effect on the Wordperfect toolbars, icons, etc. and it also has no effect on the Win10 system fonts - they all stay small and nearly impossible to read. I set the system fonts in control panel to very large - it seems to be about a 9 point font - and that had no effect on the program font.

I've had this same problem on other Win 8 and 8.1 devices and wonder if other people are having this problem in Win10 too? Is there a solution? I hope I didn't throw away $400 on the Wordperfect suite...I called and emailed them and am still waiting for their response....Lastly, I could be mistaken but I think I read somewhere that Win10 allegedly has a compatibility mode for older programs? How do I fire that up and test it?

Right click the programs Icon and you should see Troubleshoot Compatibility.

Wow - Word Perfect? Why not MIcrosoft Office if you wanted a commercial product, or one of the free duo of Open Office or Libre Office (which have to be as good or better than Word Perfect)?

Thanks Shaddy. I personally use a Rolodex for all the passwords. Spinning wheel, easier to replace a card then scribbling out in a notebook which I have done in the past. I keep my passwords and my husbands on it because he keeps changing them as he forgets the old ones. You know the 'forgot your password?' Worse thing they ever offered. He keeps doing that and doesn't write it down. Like many of us, you think you'll remember. I think what he did when he turned on the Win8 computer was put hotmail address because the computer said he couldn't use it without one. At least that's what he remembers. He states he never put a password for log on. I'm not sure but he has never had a log-on password but the Start-Up screen might have confused him. I can use it but have to log on this hotmail address to get in. I can't find a way to change the log on to my name nor get rid of the hotmail address. I did turn him off as administrator and put myself, but only his log-on appears when you turn the machine on. I'll figure it out eventually when I stop using my XP machine. I just don't have the energy for this anymore. Its so tiring and time consuming to hunt around for answers or where Microsoft decided to move everything and change the names. I thought the easiest thing would be to wipe it all out by reinstalling Windows until I realized it never came with disks. How dumb! Anyway, us older folks keep plugging away best we can. I don't feel like spending the money on a tech, at this point. You and Emma are doing better than me. I haven't even gotten to Win 10 yet! Got to get past Win 8 first. Good luck to all, Jane

Interesting about one of the User Accounts not coming up. I have 2 users on my laptop, one being biz and other personal. And on the DT, I also have 3 user accounts. Hope this isn't a wide spread issue. So far, my older Brother MFC490 does not have an updated driver for Win10, so that's another black area. Glad to hear QB2010 is working for you, Randy. That's my biggest fear since I need it for the biz. Mikie, yes, I will make a system image just before upgrading if I even decide to upgrade.

I agree with Snidely, it is easier for a novice user to use a MAC than a window PC. MAC OS system and interfaces implemented/used by its applications are a lot more elegant, efficient and user friendly. MAC's hardware and software are less "open" than Window's, therefore, it has a lot less virus introduced by applications and less compatibility issues between OS and Applications. I like the 'almost' seamless integration among all the apple products/devices. In spite of having an IT division to support, we frequently have PC issues at work. I purchased my first MAC for home use in the summer of 2014, so far I have encountered zero problem. "At home with our computer nerd dad we were free to experiment on our own and get really comfortable with computers from an early age". YOU may not remember how much your parents had to pay to clean up your computers. While our children grew up we also highly encouraged them to have "hands on" experience. We are computer nerd parents working in Engineering, and with Computer Science degree, yet we still paid dearly to have 'professional' to clean up our children's virus infested Window PCs many times. For MAC new users, Apple's one year support program is a great deal. During one year, the new user could use it as many times as possible by attending trainings, group learning sessions and phone in questions to fully learn the system. The support is many times better than the technical support provided by any PC sellers.

Bluetooth dongle on win10 netbook PC?

I use to have a couple of very Cheap Bluetooth Dongles that I used and they worked great. They did after many years of service fall apart! I tried replacing them with more expensive dongles and couldn't get them to work. Snidely is right, kinda hit and miss. I do however think your problem my be deeper. Since the release of Windows 10 there have been lots of problems with WiFi Adapters and Bluetooth Adapters not functioning correctly or not at all. The 2 Acer Laptops I purchased a year ago had Windows 8 installed when I purchased them. I installed Windows 8.1 shortly after the purchase. The WiFi/Bluetooth Adapter worked great in Win 8 & 8.1. Once I installed Windows 10 on July 29th neither the WiFi or the Bluetooth worked. I ended up buying two New Cards for the Laptops and now the WiFi/Bluetooth are working great. My sister purchased the same laptop with the same WiFi/Bluetooth Card, after the Windows 10 upgrade her card works fine, no problems. The funny thing, the card that stopped working worked fine in a different Acer Laptop with Windows 10 already installed!

Not always easy in Windows 10 to find the Troubleshoot Compatibility Mode.

Go to: (C:) Program Data> Microsoft> Windows> Start Menu> Programs.

Either open the Folders to see the App Shortcuts or towards the bottom of the list of Folders you may also have some App Shortcuts.

Right Click on those Shortcuts (either in the Folders or at the bottom of the List) and you should see Troubleshoot Compatibility in the list that opens.

I called Wordperfect and they are refunding my purchase. Wordperfect Legal can easily do legal documents, that's why...plus, mail merges in Wordperfect are a snap! Plus I don't like Microsoft Office's subscription model, and I already have several copies of Microsoft Office on other devices.

I spent about 3 1/2 hours on the phone with Microsoft trying to figure out the font problem without success. They took over the laptop remotely and couldn't figure out the problem either. They rolled me back to Win 8.1 and removed the annoying upgrade reminder.

mikie_gw - I tried that but nothing happened. Also, I went online and found instructions for compatibility mode, but the instructions didn't match what I was seeing on my computer. The Microsoft lady had to install a program then do a search to find it. Overall, it seems when the upgrade was installed something wasn't installed or installed right.

I checked Open Office but read it hasn't been updated since about 2003. I might try LibreOffice. I read it's an Open Office variant that has current support. I think I have LibreOffice on my phone...Installing LibreOffice will be my next adventure...

Thanks for the help. Per Microsoft, Win10 won't play well with Wordperfect...

Apache Open Office (its current name) was last updated just a few months ago. It seems to be running out of steam as an open source project and may soon be deprecated. Libre Office is a derivative project now on its own branch and is actively being developed with a set calendar for new version releases

About a year ago, I got a new PC and when I couldn't find my MS Office disk, I tried out Open and Libre. I found Libre unnecessarily complicated for me as a non-power user. I preferred Open because it was quite a bit easier to use. I've since found my disk and have discontinued using both free systems.

Win 8.1 and 10 compatibility mode?
