Win 7 laptop will not boot

This is a Toshiba
Satellite C 875D – S7225 with an AMD A6 processor with 500GB HDD
and 6GB of memory. The machine is 3 years old and has worked fine
until recently. When the trouble began you would boot the machine,
the way it was setup, there was an overall password which works.
Then comes the Windows 7 sign in page. When this page opens the
password area is already filled in with a row of asterisks. And
these cannot be removed therefore no access. Nor will the machine
recognize the F keys, therefore cannot access the safe mode.

After several tries
including turning the machine off with all other devices and battery
removed and holding the start button down for 30 seconds to clear any
possible electrical charges, now it will no longer accept the first
password.

Perhaps something has
corrupted Windows 7? Any solution other than reinstalling Win 7?

BTW, when does the free up
grade to Windows 10 expire?

Those are some very good suggestions Zep516 posted for you Tom. The time to download Windows 10 should Expire July 28th, 2016, one year from the Official Release Date of July 29, 2015!

If mine, as soon as I saw the first signs of live on the display I would push and hold in the power button for maybe 5 seconds - which will cause a hardware reset. Then if still no go... I would be tapping the F8 key to try to get to the special Startup menu... Then choose startup repair. If you cant get to the startup menu you need to know how to boot from DVD, which a few ways on mine.. One is maybe F2 or F10, or F11.. I forget quickly after power up. Another way is Ctrl + C or Ctrl + D quickly after power on. To boot off a Windows7 repair disc, or windows 7 install disc DVD, to get to its StartUp repair function. If you don't have a win7 install dvd or startup repair dvd disc, you can make a StartUp Repair disc/DVD/CD off of another win7 computer with same matching bits. . x64 or 32 bit. no sound from WMP on Win 7 laptop since defragging

Thanks, Owbist. I tried that yesterday, but nothing changed with WMP. However, I thought it might be a good idea to redo the procedure. Some striking changes occurred this time. All of my WAV files now open in Windows Live Movie Maker. I tried to play a music CD and got the box that said Windows couldn't open the file. When I checked the properties of the music, it shows as a CDA File... (I'm not alarmed - I know there has to be a fix.) OK, I thought... I'll just go back to the Media Features and redo the procedure. However, there are now no check marks in the WMP or Media Center boxes! I record 3 church services a week on this laptop. I take the sound from - I believe it's called a preamp - (signal too strong directly from mixer) and am able to record in Audacity. I now have audio in Audacity whereas I lost it after the defrag. However, the wav files I made from the audacity project files now open in window movie maker and are unplayable... I don't think I will ever defrag this laptop again!!! :)

it can be done and once you figure out what it is it is very quick and easy unfortunately I can not remember but I did find it by googling and it was easy to find. I did post the info here for someone so searching here may turn it up also. Have you checked to make sure every single computer in the network has the same workgroup name and printer share name every thing has to be exactly the same on all. this is one site I did use Sharing Files In Windows 7 Setting up your HomeGroup Share a Printer on Your Network from Vista or XP to Windows 7 this one may be the one that helped me out do the directions given by jimbo45 be sure you use the actual names of your computers and printer instead of the example names he uses. 7 Printer sharing

If you'd be more comfortable using "Windows Photo Gallery", you can still add it. It's part of "Windows Essentials". Where is the best place to download it? I don't know but without looking too hard I found a link provided by Andre Da Costa, an MVP and volunteer moderator on the Microsoft "Community" help forum. ( install windows 10 photo gallery ) http://web.archive.org/web/20170112124505/http://wl.dlservice.microsoft.com/download/C/1/B/C1BA42D6-6A50-4A4A-90E5-FA9347E9360C/en/wlsetup-all.exe Personally, when installing I'd read the prompts and click "Choose the programs you want to install": And deselect everything except "Photo Gallery and Movie Maker": Then you'll have "Photo Gallery" available: Which if you want, you can set as the default photo viewer: BTW, I *suspect* the reason your older Win10 machines had Photo Gallery already installed may be because they were upgraded from Win7 or Win8? From what I've read, Win10 no longer comes with Photo Gallery (it comes with Photos) but performing an upgrade won't blow it away. I haven't used Photo Gallery much if at all but when I briefly opened it, I saw that it includes an "Import Photos" option that may be what you're familiar with, and would make it easier?

Tom, did you create the Toshiba recovery media upon purchase of the laptop? If so, you can use the recovery media to make repairs or reinstall Windows.

Try using the F2 Key when suggested at boot up. This will allow you to change the boot menu to boot from CD. When you get to that stage, there are many options to make repairs, reinstall, etc. from the Recovery Media or Windows 7 CD.

I appreciate your assistance. It appears I have to obtain Recovery data. The machine with the problem is my wife's. My machine is very similar except I have Windows 8 upgraded to 8.1. It was purchased a few months later and could not get another Win 7 machine at the time. Anyway, I have recovery media on my machine and copied it to a thumb drive. But her machine does not recognize it and still unable to get any response from F keys, etc. All I get when attempting to boot is a blue screen with white lettering like I was in the Safe mode asking for a password. However it will not accept any characters.

I've looked on eBay and will order one and we see where we go from here.
