Win. 7 homegroup, printer sharing.

I have a brand new HP with Win. 7. Upgraded a Vista laptop to Win. 7. Homegroup should make sharing a printer easy, shouldn't it? The laptop Win. 7 cannot share the printer. The status is error. Cannot access, Win. 7 says. Both comps have been set to share the printer, and I followed Win. instructions to the letter. Can anyone help?

I have spent 2 hours today, 2 win 7 computers have not got
printer sharing going yet but I can share data drives..

you do have to have exactly the same names on the workgroup and on the printer on all computers.

I managed to get it done on my network with windows 7 and xp but I did have to do a lot of googling to find the way to get it to work.

What do you mean? All the words on the collage used at least once? OK let me see if I can clarify the mistery: I made a collage with 25 pictures. Each picture has a name on what you see in the picture. YOUR job is to find the right word to each picture. You only have to write a word ONCE!! Then next time you post, you can use totally new words. Your goal is to get as many words matching the collage words as possible by the 18th. I keep track of the correctly guessed words of each one of you. Tonight I will tally up the scores after everone has posted...speack midnight lol. Just not sure how often you all wanna here the scores??? I do not want to discourage the players that did not guess a lot yet ;-) But like MJ when she guessed on the Frosty, she got a lot of other words just by guessing in that direction ...hint hint hahaha I will be back later Just to make sure nobody has any questions and FUN FUN FUN ...under the sun or snow or rain? One of the many new innovations included in Windows 7 is a much improved system of home networking called HomeGroup. As well as offering easier and more diverse allocation of permissions to shared content, access is protected by a password which, for small business networks, is a necessity. As soon as Windows 7 is installed, it creates a default HomeGroup. If it detects an existing HomeGroup, you will be given the opportunity to join, but you will need the password. For home and small business users, HomeGroup is an excellent tool, but there is a problem. HomeGroup only works when all other machines on the network have Windows 7 installed, which in the short term, may not be the case. There will be many situations where the network has XP or Vista machines as part of the network, in addition to Windows 7. So, how is it possible to get them all to work together? Are there any Cleaning Features you can use. Sometimes this will help when a printer has sat for a while. On my Brother Inkjet (MFC-845cw) I have to clean it numerous times to get it to print correctly. It doesn't get used much (only for Photos on Photo Paper). We have Two Brother Color Laser AIO Printers (MFC-9440cn and DCp9040cn) that are the really workhorses in our printing. Your Printer has a LED Readout and in the Menu you might find the Cleaning Feature. Scroll thru and see if you can find it. Once you find this feature run it several times to see if it helps. I would run it 10-15 times to be sure it's printing correctly!

I have two suggested approaches, with no guarantee either would work. In order of preference: 1) plug the printer into the netbook. See if Windows on its own with the plug and play capability handles a driver download and install 2) Failing that, change the settings so that the printer is treated as a "network printer" and then try to add it as the default printer for the netbook. Absent that, you can share folders between the two PCs and when there's something on the netbook you want to print, save it to a folder on the desktop or on the laptop that the desktop is permitted access to and print from the desktop. There may be other approaches too.

I restored the laptop to the day 7 was installed. Still no luck. I think I will chalk it up Microsoft, and forget the whole thing!

it can be done and once you figure out what it is it is very quick and easy unfortunately I can not remember but I did find it by googling and it was easy to find. I did post the info here for someone so searching here may turn it up also.

Have you checked to make sure every single computer in the network has the same workgroup name and printer share name every thing has to be exactly the same on all.

this one may be the one that helped me out do the directions given by jimbo45 be sure you use the actual names of your computers and printer instead of the example names he uses.

I got lucky today and printed from a shared printer, win 7
to win 7.. the only thing i did different was clicked network-
then the other win 7 computer-right clicked printer icon--
clicked connect

then i opened note pad typed a few words--then print

it worked for the first time

will install office 2007 tonight and post print results

my fix was using the instructions on that last link I provided I highly suggest trying that method by jimbo45.

this is for win 7 to win 7 it is different from win7 to xp

another thing i just found, you have to disable sleep and
password after screensaver..or go in bios and enable wake on land
