8 years agolast modified: 8 years agoHere is everybody that was on the side porch at the old house. Approx. 130 pots, 5 of them are Astilbe. While I do love the Cobble Stone, it is treacherous when wet.
This strip receives virtually no sun, so I thought it the best place to keep the potted ones cooler longer.
At the old house, that side porch would get smacked with sun in the early spring before the leaves came out, and I'm convinced it heated up the pots too much and pushed the hostas up early ... which is why I seemed to always suffer from some sort of late frost damage.
Hoping that is not the case here. We'll see. :)
Next is a pic of the back yard standing in the same place the above picture was taken. I simply raised the camera up ... all the pots are to the left at my feet.

I plan on lining the entire length of it with all my potted hostas, to start. I desperately need to get them get them into the ground (sorry Pot-Heads, I'm jumping ship) and the previous owners have already cut out the entire length for planting. So I'm going to just mad-dash everything into the ground this year and slowly sort them out in the years to come as I clear more space.
In my climate, they do so much better in the ground vs. pots and I fret too much each winter hoping they don't rot or suffer in some way.
Ohhhh but how awesome that will look for a couple of years with nothing but hostas running the whole length.
This is the end of the wall to the left. My yard continues up to the fence and down the side of the house for more planting. Pic of that space later.
And here is the end of the wall to the right. You can see the end of the driveway over in the corner, and again my yard extends up past the wall into allllll that nasty English Ivy.

It is extremely deceiving when standing down by the house looking up. Once you are up there though it's like a whole other world.

This is the side strip that runs the length of the fence to the front yard. This will be a nice section of shade once it is cleared, but that will take some time ...
This little patch is literally the MOST SHADE I have on the entire property and shoved some of my ferns and Sacred Asian Lily in there frantically last Fall before it got cold. This will be a tight space until some more is sorted out and I can get things moved around.
Finally, here I am sitting at my computer desk looking out into the backyard.
This window was a HUGE selling point for me when considering the house since you can virtually see the entire backyard. I look forward to the years ahead when I can relax in the air conditioning and stare out at it for hours.
Such an exciting time, and again so thankful for the warm welcome back.
I have big plans ... but a limited budget and 10 fingers.
If gardening doesn't teach us patience, not much else will.

Comments (4)Philomena has it right, but it cannot be emphasized enough -- have the new site ready *before* digging up anything. Moving plants is hard work and so is preparing a new bed, you'll do best if you only do a bit at a time. If you don't already have them, I'd suggest using this year to photo what comes up (at least once a week); and spend time to prepare the new area. Do yourself a favor and consider whether to include drip irrigation and hardscaping in the new bed, especially lawn edging with or without a raised wall to edge the bed. Time and money required, but irrigation quickly pays for itself, and a wide mowing edge is wonderful for keeping grass out of the flowers. Comments (24)Good morning ladies, I wasn't going to continue with my saga BUT everyone seems to be in the same boat with their children. My twenty y/o daughter did get herself a moving van at eighteen. She had a severe case of what I refer to as eighteenitis. She's twenty now and going to college to become a lawyer, problem is she has ruined her credit. She has no car or health insurance which is illegal in MA. She has overdrawn her bank account and the banks nasty messages come to my house. She got a scholarship for free tuition but never turned it in, I guess she was too busy being eighteen and all. I was paying her $2500 a year insurance bill until March when I decided, I'm not paying her rent anymore! I have free room and board here, school is twenty minutes from our home. It only makes matters worse when she calls me 3 days a week to pick her up and drive her to work at 8am and then to the second job at 5. I work too and this interferes with my job at times. She says that she'll move home if her boyfriend can sleep over. I told her he could sleep over on occasion BUT he would sleep downstairs and she would sleep upstairs. Well, you would have thought that I killed someone. She signed a new lease the next day!! I'm at my witts end with this kid, I'm not sure who's right and who's wrong anymore! Okay, I'm done. Comments (17)Oh yes, that is good news. I asked, because MY cooktop is currently on an interior wall and we are NOT able to vent with a hood. Complicated reasons but its been the one thing that I now ask about frequently since it is so annoying. That being said, we are moving soon anyway, but I would definitely recommend up draft vs. down. And never give up window space ;-) I think your plans look good and you will love getting that sink out of a corner. I've seen some pictures with the sink offset in the island to minimize it's prominence. But I've seen it in the middle too. There is a thread on here right now that is worried that sink is off center in alignment with the cooktop and kitchen. Sink is in the island. Have you see it? Is' a very pretty kitchen. I would think about though how many cooks are typically in the kitchen. If you aren't careful you could one person at the stove hitting backs with another doing the dishes. Comments (44)S-L-O-W progress ... lowers are done, just need to get the appliances in place and all of the uppers installed. Countertop is templated - next Friday it gets installed, then we start on the backsplash, then add hood & shelves! **MAYBE** a little over 2.5 weeks to go? Demo started on July 3, and we look to be mostly on schedule for being "done" on August 8, a total construction (mayhem) time of 5 weeks. We've only had one bug hiccup so far - my cabinet guy ordered a 30" wide microwave shelf for a 24" drawer microwave -- oops. That won't arrive until August 28 so we'll likely have the MW in place on a tiny table until it's permanent home arrives. The two little ones were a dent in the door (Sears was out in 2 days to swap the door - after trying like heck to get me to keep it as is for $180 -- are you kidding me??!) and the super-adhesive used on the old floor that took an extra day to get up! After almost a month of this ... I'm so ready to be done. Patience is definitely starting to wear thin ... but I'm starting to see a real kitchen developing!...See MoreLudicious Acres
