I like the horizontal pulls too, centered vertically on drawers, 3" from the top/bottoms to line up with your top drawer pulls. Another option: we're going with Berenson finger pulls. One size horizontal pulls look fantastic when the drawers and cabinets are all the same width, or close in size. But most of us have varying drawer and cabinets widths. If possible, try to limit the number of different sizes and try to keep the proportion of the pull to width the same. On my 36" and 39" cabinets I have 14 1/2" pulls. On my 18" to 27" cabinets and drawers, the pulls are 10 1/2" (I have horizontal pulls on cabinets as well and love the look.) From 13" to 17", I have 8" pulls and I have two narrow cabinets (12") which are in a corner and because of the handle hitting another cabinet, needed 6" pulls. My preference is for the longer pulls as it has a more contemporary look. Try putting measured strips of blue painter's tape on your cabinets and drawers to see which lengths you prefer.

I love theanimala's kitchen. Thanks for showing it again! I love the horizontal pulls myself, but they seem ergonomically strange to me to have them on cabs that swing open to one side. I'm planning on horizontal like above on the drawers and cabs that pull straight out (trash cab) and then putting the pulls vertical on cabs that swing to one side. The long vertical element will alredy be introduced in the fridge doors. Is that an option for you? Maybe you could ask Theanimala how her cabs are holding up? I've seen several kitchen lately with the combo of the three you described. From the pictures, it seems slightly too much for me, but I'm more into simpler, cleaner lines. I haven't had knobs on cabs in many years, but I remember moving into this house with pulls and realizing how much easier it was to open cabs as there is more surface area to grab than a knob. Great chandy, BTW. What's the source?

Being a computer geek (by nature and by profession) and being married to a systems engineering professor who specializes in ergonomics and interface design, my view is that it should be obvious when looking at the cabinet door what will happen when you try to open it. Which is why we never even considered horizontal bar pulls on cabinet doors. In looking at gizmonike's kitchen above, its obvious that the large cabinet door in the upper right of the image is hinged along its left edge (as you face it) and that the door will swing open to that side. If gizmonike had centered horizontal bar pulls, the natural expection of someone approaching the cabinet would be to grab the left end and try to swing the door to the right. Admittedly if it were your kitchen you'd quickly adapt and know to grab the "wrong" end for that particular door, and the number of "new users" being confused by it wouldn't be very high, but to me it seems to be a matter of choosing form (looks better) over function (works slightly less well) that goes against my nature.
