My no-backsplash backsplash
Comments (33)I'm not seeing a current picture witht he sink -- just the one with the paper down on the wood which I understand to be before use. That wall looks like it has a raw end of drywall, not a side that is finished (paper or whatever) or maybe even no drywall. It looks like they tried to smooth joint compound in there, either by itself over your studs and built up or over something less than a full side of finished drywall. Joint compound will turn to mud (that's what they call it when it's wet -- hence the verb to "mud" the walls) and dissolve away if it gets wet. Paint will only seal the surface, and if water gets behind it -- well, I dare say it is probably worse than damp sheetrock, which is worse than damp green board. You say they had to sheer away your window sill. Did that sill come below the window too? I don't think you've got clean drywall there. I think you've got a really poor job of mudding and an even worse job of sealing the joint. That's my guess....See MoreMy two tone kitchen reveal sans backsplash
Comments (28)I haven't been here in a while, I have missed seeing and hearing about all the new kitchens! I thought I would post an update, now that we have lived with our kitchen for over a year. I really love my two tone cabinets, the cherry base cabinets are warm and inviting and the mushroom wall cabinets keep the kitchen from being too dark. After all the angst of the decision, I am so glad I went with the solid wall of cabinets. And I am still in awe of my granite, do not for one single second regret the money spent on it! We ended up doing a stacked beige subway tile for the backsplash, with a herringbone pattern behind the range and I am very happy with my choice. As for appliances, I still love my microwave drawer, I use it every day and the only complaint I have is that the panel doesn't light up well. And I absolutely adore my fridge, love it so much we got the same one for my son! The produce drawer is still my favorite feature, and the ice maker my least favorite. We have never run out of ice, but we are a small family and when we have company, we always use bagged ice. But I can see this being an issue for a larger family without a second fridge with ice maker. I am very happy with my Bosch dishwasher, it does a great job and I've never had the goop issue some were having when I bought mine. The big miss in my kitchen is the range, I should have gone with induction. And I really dislike the surface of my range, it is a pain to keep clean, I miss the ease of my Thermador cooktop. And if I had it to do over again, I would have done drawers in the two base cabinets that don't have them. I still cannot believe how much more organized my kitchen is because of the drawer bases! I had a hard time wrapping my brain around how they would function for me, but after living with my kitchen for a year, I would do an all drawer kitchen in a heartbeat. Overall, I am so grateful to have a kitchen that is both functional and beautiful, and I so appreciate all the advice and encouragement I got from this forum!...See Moresmall kitchen backsplash help
Comments (16)Since i haven't seen the tile itself, I can't speak to whether it looks like "factory" quality. I will say that I think the colors look fantastic and I love the idea of the mini mosaic on the curved wall. It would, I think, really set it apart and make it a focus point. How about seeking something larger format and plainer...that coordinates well with the mini mosaic for the rest of the kitchen? I wouldn't do the brick in the same mosaic...too much of the same and wouldn't make the curvy wall so special....See MorePartial kitchen reveal / Backsplash advice needed
Comments (12)Thanks everyone!! dianalo, thanks for the suggestion re:Remodela's backsplash (very nice!). Not sure I understand about going higher than 5.5" for a ss backsplash. If we went with a soapstone backsplash, we were thinking of 5.5" up to the window trim and then stepping it down to 4" for the rest of the perimeter. lavendar lass, we're definitely going for a more traditional look, although the ceiling is a bit more contemporary more by default. We've even considered attaching some beams in the vaulted ceiling to give it more of traditional look. The ceiling will likley remain white but, we'll be painting the walls (either a green or light gray). We are looking to use some simple window treatments (shades?) . We also have a couple of pendants from Barnlightelectric for over the peninsula. Hope this helps give you a feel. Thanks mpagmom. It's good to hear that all-tile backsplashes aren't a problem for cleaning. Is that true for behind the sink and range also? Thanks palimpsest, we're definitely going for more traditional as mentioned above. If you only have the soapstone under the window and glass over the range, are there generally problems with with just drywall everywhere else? Someone mentioned that variations in the wall may leave some separations between the soapstone counter and the drywall. Is that a real concern? One complication is that we really need to finalize the soapstone layout and let them know if we want any soapstone for the backsplash. It might be easier if we could decide after the rest of the kitchen was together. Keep your thoughts and suggestions coming as we're still searching....See More- 8 years ago
