I have many of Rob's varieties and find for the most part they are excellent. Same with Pittman varieties. I like Adams which has come up with a lot of unique varieties such as Toronto Belle and Rare Jewel. Toronto Belle has variegated girl foliage and does not bloom as frequently as I would prefer, but its small perfection in rosette makes it a keeper for me. Rare Jewel has a unique two tone maroon color. The older varieties such as Precious Pink, Little Pro, and Snuggles are still going strong. Little Bountiful has a wonderful flower and tidy rosette. I enjoy some of the unusual ones such as Wee WillY Winkie and Aly's Blizzard Bunny, which is always in bloom with full double white flowers. Nancy

Oh Rose! I'm so glad you named the gomphrena. I've been admiring a neighbor's plant, and wondering "what in the world is that?" I love it! I know others have had problems with their Rudbeckia this year, but mine have been outstanding! I have Rudbeckia fulgida (I think) and Cutleaf coneflower (a spring trade find.) My Chelone (Turtlehead) has had lovely dark green foliage all summer, and now it's starting to bloom. Can't wait! Also, my Agastaches have done really well. The scent is fabulous, and they have such a nice cool blue/lavender flower. Pam

Thinking of another fragrant one to sub for Holy Mole, I imagine that Stained Glass would be sure to hold its edge....which is not really wide, but then the center is what is wide. It could fade some of the gold, but it is still a good looking plant. Then one that is tough as nails and similar in COLOR to Stained Glass is Dick Ward. Same sort of variegation, light center and dark margins. But not fragrant. Are you looking for a medium-large sort of hosta? or a large? I see that Alex Summers with a dark center and a gold margin is a smooth and well organized hosta. But so is Satisfaction. And the older one of my Satisfactions has a very tough leaf. I got it in 2010, it was my NOID. The new Satisfaction which came this year has not developed the substance the other one has. So if you do not have a Satisfaction, take a look at a mature one and see if it does what you want by your front steps. If the first thing your visitors say is WHAT IS THAT PLANT OUT THERE? you know you made the right choice. :)

Below is the info. that Floweraremusic (zone 5) in Washington gave on her 2020 winter-survival. She has alkaline clay with rocks at bottom like mine & less snow in winter: "My hardiest roses are the Canadians. John Davis, John Cabot, Wm. Baffin, Morden Sunrise, Morden Blush and Morden Centennial, Victorian Memory aka Isabelle Skinner, also a Canadian rose. All these only have tiny bit of tip damage and bloom a lot with no special care. Also, my Hybrid Perpetuals only have tip damage after winter. Magna Charta, Mrs. John Laing, Black Prince and Marchesa Buccella. The only negative is they don’t have long enough cutting stems. All my Austins are very hardy. The one I just can not grow is Jude. Leonardo da Vinci is super hardy and always healthy. Quietness comes through winter very well. Even Rouge Royale survives beautifully. Cinderella Fairy Tale is very hardy. Gruss an Aachen also. Ballerina and Marjorie Fair are both hardy. Poseidon, Princess Charlene de Monaco and Crazy Love didn’t do as well as I’d hoped. The surprise losses this year are Quicksilver, and Dames de Chenonceau who is left with only 1 cane. Versigny is also reduced down to almost nothing. This was a mild winter with very little snow.
