Germination rate

The plant I just had to have, the one that inspired me to start seeds, will be ready to transplant next.

While shopping for start up supplies, a few packets of seeds made their way into my cart. Then a friend at work brought me in another pack. Of course I had to start those too lol.

Here are all that germinated very well, most have been transplanted...

Painted daisy

Aubrieta

4 oclocks

Blue fescue

Oriental poppies

Here is my inspiration...the lowest germination rate...go figure :/

Campanula lactiflora 'Prichards variety'

Although I do have more seeds...

I also have verbena bonariensis just starting to get true leaves.

The temps are warming up from here on out. My sunroom should be warm enough to move the strongest ones into this week, making room for future transplants under the lights.

Spring will be here very soon :0) keeping my fingers crossed that these continue to do well. Wished I would have tried this years ago...I wanted more instant gratification like most I guess.

Until then my little snow bunny is enjoying the 'last hurrah' (hopefully) of snow.....

Soak some of the marigold seeds for 3 hours. Plant. Test germination on soak seeds. Then take some remaining seeds and put them in a damp paper towel and store them in a frig for two days. Plant them all (germinated and not germinated). I studied germination rates on marigolds last year and noticed that moisture helps alot. Make sure you fertilize with a very diluted water soluble fertilizer everyday for the first 6 days after the first true leaves appear. If transplanted, fertilize with a granular 7 days after transplanting. Good Luck

I always figure 85 percent is good, at least for most seeds. Some things - peas, corn, lettuce, carrots - I'm sure they are lower. IME, the most important factor is the potting mix. Too coarse, too fine, inability to hold moisture, holding too much moisture - they can be real detrimental. Too much heat can cook the seeds, but 72 is not too warm or too cold. Covering the plants with too much mix can either delay germination or even keep it from happening. Plus, there the seeds themselves. I bought 100 Bhut Seeds and got about 18 seedlings, not good. The purveyor sent me another 50 (free!), I sowed 18 and 17 of them germinated. From another place I bought Jalapeno, Habanero, Hungarian Hot Wax, Cayenne and Tabasco seeds. All except the Tabasco had at least 85 percent germ, the Tabasco - one of 24! They were all sown in the same tray, watered exactly the same and experienced the same temps. Thank you all for your comments. I have moved the plants as far away from the trees as possible and put the stuff growing the best into the green house. We're having had 3 consecutive days of very cold weather and I've been covering some of the tender plants with sheets at night--that has seemed to help. Unfortunately transplanting has been hard because of the cold and wind. I need to have the trees cut down as they have grown to such an ominous size that their branches reach nearly over my whole back yard. This year I'm have a lot of physical issues and pain and it has been a challenge to even get out of bed, but I keep trying. The only other place to move the plants is the front yard which is small and very hot and it would be hard to keep them watered. My strategy is to get them transplanted into larger pots with good soil or into the ground where they have more resilience from the surrounding soil. I wonder if I could buy a clear netting somewhere. Any ideas? Micki

Is NJ one of the states that got continual rain this summer? My packet of seeds says "corn seed will rot in wet soil, especially cool wet soil." I got about 5% germination rate this year from my first planting of corn in June (with continual rain). We finally had three days in a row of no rain, and I replanted last week (raining again today . . . no rain predicted, and yet here it is. What a summer!) It might be too late (if we have frost before it's ready) but I figured it was worth the gamble. Better luck next year to both of us!
