Blackberry Primacane question

I planted some Kiowa blackberries last year and I'm cleaning the weeds from my beds. I just wanted to make sure I'm not killing any of the new primacane that are sprouting. So what time of year should I be on the look out for them? Thanks

New weeds near last year's plantings that are in moist loose soil should
pull right out without harming the berry plants, assuming that a
reasonable amount of soil was cleared and loosened prior to the planting.

If you have large weeds or clumped grass growing right up to the base of the canes, and pulling these out would greatly disturb the soil, wait until the new canes are a few inches tall and weed carefully at that point. Do no use hoes or or other tools at or near the cane bases.

New canes emerge in the spring, but the week or even the month can vary.

Kiowa is a low chill variety. When I had that variety (I live in northern Kentucky) I would start seeing new primocanes emerge as early as mid-March. If you have a week of warm weather (50+F) the plant will take off growing.

Nick: 2nd season blackberry floricanes do produce leaves, and quite a few of them. Many blackberry varieties, especially the trailing, thornless types like Triple Crown and Doyle will grow in extensive laterals in their floricane season before also growing the blossom panicles that actually produce the berries. So you have a perfectly normal situation. Let the floricanes grow their leaves, and you will get a small crop of first-season blackberries. There is no advantage to picking off the blossoms or trying to prevent the canes from fruiting with this plant. They are not like blueberries. Don Yellman, Great Falls, VA

How long ago did you plant them, and did you plant bareroot plants or root cuttings? Really, though, it's quite variable on how long it'll take the new primocanes to come up. It depends on how healthy your planting stock was, how deeply you planted, how warm your soil temps are, etc. As to how many to expect with each plant, that's also largely dependent on the health of your planting stock. You do know that these first year primocanes will be trailing, right? After that, they'll be erect, but the very first set of primocanes are trailing. You can tie them up if you'd wish, and that way the fruit next year won't be on the ground and will be easier to pick.

Thank y'all! Maybe my feed store will even have a Triple Crown locally and I won't have to pay shipping :) I'm excited for all my berries this year. I have Loganberry (quite early, I think), Cherokee Blackberry (early and very yummy last year), Tayberry and Boysenberry (I don't know when those come exactly) and then a couple of raspberries! I had no idea raspberries could be so good, only having had store-bought :) I have a killer cobbler recipe, too, if anyone needs one :D
