Replaced big round drum table with small table.

We're spiffing up the LR a bit. We got a new bigger rug, as the old one was too small. Last month we ordered a new couch, which is scheduled to be delivered on March 15th.

The big round end table next to the sofa on the left side was too big and crowded out the small rocker. The rocker we can date back to 1909 in my hubby's family, it has special meaning to us, as it has rocked several generations of babies in our family.

We decided to donate the end table. When I went to good will I found an adorable Indian elephant and a costume jewelry pin. The elephant was dirty, had a broken toe, and two broken tusks.

We repaired his toe and made him new tusks out of wood and cleaned him up with furniture oil.

Then we made a Bombay-ish style little table to place on the wall by the wall unit. It looks adorable and it lights up the area and the wall unit nicely.

I was originally planning to shop for a pole lamp to light up the area, but it just didn't fit with my vision of what I wanted for the corner.

Where the ficus tree is (next to the couch) is where the big drum table was. Hope ya'll think it's as cute as we do.

The lamp I already had, I just hit it with some gold paint.

My MIL had a house full of antiques. I grew up with all modern furniture. As time went on she gave me a pie crust table and an old Stockman's desk. More time went by and I learned these were hand me down's from her MIL--that she HATED. Any "worth" they had was removed when she refinished them decades before I came along. She was a modern gal who wanted all new and modern circa 1960. I happen to LOVE them both. When she died we went through the house trying to decide what to do with all her things. We decided early on much of it was stuff SHE loved and it was ok that we did not. The things served their purpose for her and now their time has passed. You could either save the table in a back room for the next generation who may love it or guilt free LET IT GO. It's the legs--they are really bringing the table to an unattractive place.

OK, after reading beverly's post, I removed the rug. And after removing that large, dark rectangular rug, it was actually a tie between the round and the square side table. And I placed a roundish lamp on the square table, and it really softened things up. I am going to go to the paint store and see what the folks there have to say about gel staining a factory finished round end table. But I have to tell you, 'm leaning towards the square because in real life it looks more classic and like a higher end table than the round...wow, this project is never-ending!! Thanks so much for your help, much appreciated and will post an update.

How big does a round table have to be to fit 5 chairs?

We have a 42"" pedestal table for the 4 of us. It is enough for 4 chairs, but with four placemats there is only enough room left to place one....vase, cassarole dish, etc... in the middle of the table. If meals are served "family style" with bowls on the table, I would definitely go for the larger (48"") table. Our kitchen is so small that once I plate the food, I leave the ketchup, mustard, extra veggies, etc. on a near-by counter, a single step away. We had an exchange student who stayed with us for 6 months; at first we squeezed around the table, eventually I added a leaf so that we could all sit--of course there was no room to get up and move, but at least we could sit together. The other issue for me (read PIA) is lining up the chairs around the stand part of the pedestal so that I can push them all the way in. I'd suggest moving your table around to get a feel for the size of the people in your family and the aisle space needed. The NKBA recommendation of 44"" seems sufficient to me, unless it is a very high traffic area. hope this helps.

I have a DR that is almost 13' square so mine is close to your size. My DR table (without leaves) is almost exactly 56" square. It looks great when no one is eating at it, but even without putting in a leaf (it will seat 5 a bit crowded, 4 better), it is hard to get around. I have a small sideboard on one wall, a chest on another wall, and no furniture on the 3rd/4th walls and it's still crowded. Serving is a nightmare as I cannot get behind the chairs to go around the table. If I put in a leaf (my leaves are about 24" wide), I can seat 6 comfortably. One Christmas, I had to put in 2 leaves, and the people at the end, well, one had his chair practically in the entrance into the LR, and the other was up against the french doors that lead to outside - it was awful and this was to seat 9 people! I cannot imagine how you can possibly use your table in this room, or any other table and hope to seat 10 people. It's just not big enough. It takes a BIG DR to hold a table that can seat 10 comfortably. My DD has a DR that is 15' x 16 1/2'. Her table is 52" wide and if she uses small chairs, she can seat two at each end and with two leaves in her table (a triple pedestal table), she can seat 4 down each side, thus 12 in total. One time, she seated 14 - it was very cramped - no b&b plates, single wine glass in the table setting.

The pooch seems nonchalant about this. However, I think it really complements the look of your room: Elegant, comfortable, and a touch of whimsy.

table top 7 1/2" X 9 1/2" X 26" high. I hope it looks Bombay like.

another little table in the room ( next to the gold chair) is a

bombay table that was a gift from my Dad.

I love everything about your room! The table and your rug are beautiful. Your home is a much desired break from all of the homes that look alike. Don't get me wrong, there are many gorgeous homes out there but they often do not show any personality the way yours does. Thank you for sharing!

I haven't been here long enough to see much of your home, but I echo grapefruit's sentiments. This home is obviously YOU, and it's a pleasure to study all the individual details. Knowing that you've crafted so much of this with your own hands makes it even more personal and inviting. Your sweet doggie obviously knows that he's the star, not that little pipsqueak elephant!

Thank you all so much for your sweet comments. It is much appreciated. I'll post more pics of the room after the couch is

delivered. I'm hoping the couch makes a dramatic change.

We've been shopping for a couch since the end of August (actually two couches, we also purchased a leather recliner couch for the family room as well)

Finally, after getting a new rug for the family room and a new

rug for the living room, picking new couches suddenly became

much easier.
