Whirlpool Thin Twin Won't stop spinning!!

I have a Whirlpool Thin Twin YLTE5243DQ1.
When it switches to the spin cycle after rinsing (not final spin) it won't stop! It just keeps spinning endlessly until I manually advance the timer. The final spin works fine and it seems that all the other cycle timers are fine. I briefly popped the drain hose off the back to check for obvious clogs, but I couldn't see anything big. The washer is in a tight little closet so I'll have to remove the whole unit in order to properly check the hoses.
I really hope this isn't a timer issue and is instead a clog or something somewhere in the unit.
Has anyone had issues where a timer partially failed on just one part of the cycle? It seems to me that if the timer was going to fail it would stop working for everything. I noticed that in the drain hose there was quite a bit of water, is it normal for the bend of the hose to retain some water after draining?
I'm going to pull it apart tonight and check everything I can before calling in a repairman. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I assume this problem occurs only on the Normal cycle? The timer stops advancing at the final spin, never gets to the Off position? The problem does not occur on Perm Press, Delicate, and Soak?

It's caused by a bad timer, worn gear at that point in the rotation.

A clogged hose would have absolutely nothing to do with this problem.

Yes, it's normal for some water to remain in the drain hose (and in the pump) after a cycle is finished.

It's not the final spin that it won't advance, it's the rinse cycle spin, there's a final spin after that and it stops normally once it's been manually advanced to the final spin cycle and allowed to run.
The problem only happens during the regular cycle. All other cycles run just fine. So at the moment the washing machine is still 90% usable, I just have to pay attention to it and manually advance the timer when I think it's spun enough. Not a huge annoyance but still removes some of the convenience from the washing machine, also dangerous if I one day forget to advance it and it just keeps spinning until it burns out.
At least I can narrow it down before I call a tech in to fix so he can have the parts on hand.
I'm going to open the panel tonight and make sure all the timer wiring is in place and check that the timer knob and spindle aren't catching on anything.

One more thing, there is a "neutral drain" sequence that engages after the agitate cycle. After agitation, the motor reverses direction and pumps the standing water out of the tub. Then the motor stops for 5 seconds and then restarts in the same direction. This disengages the neutral drain and engages the spin. Be sure to let the drain cycle complete prior to checking the spin. There is a kind gentleman on the web named Angel Acevedo who has prepared a series of excellent videos that will help you find and repair the failure in the spin/agitate cycles. I am going to be tied up for the rest of the day with my family and won't be on the computer, however, if you view these videos they will give you a good idea of the way to diagnose where the problem lies. The clutch is the first suspect, and if not that, it is the gearbox, assuming the motor is turning, which it should be now that you have fixed the cap. To check the clutch, I suggest this video. It shows how to replace the clutch if it proves bad. If the clutch is good, or you see no drive going to the clutch, then the problem is in the transmission itself. There is a repair procedure to fix a rather common failure mode in this transmission, but it involves having to tap and drill out a (presumably) busted stud. The kit is cheap, but you have to open the case, not a whole lot of fun unless you want to learn how the gearbox works. It is really not too complicated, but it IS messy. The good news is you can get refurb transmissions, complete and guaranteed, on ebay for under a hundred bucks. There's a used one for 35 bucks. But I would suspect the clutch first, check that, before moving on to the gearbox.

Possibly the safety lid switch is the problem. The switch typically (on older machines) does not come into play during fill and agitate phases of the cycle. What the machine does at the start of the "rinse" phase of the cycle is drain the wash water, then a short spin. The actual rinse sequence is a fill and brief agitate (typically indicated as a dot or asterisk on the timer). There is no "water solenoid on the drain side" on these machines. The motor is reversible. It runs one direction for agitate, reverses direction for drain/spin. Assuming the machine in question isn't a very early specimen of the direct drive design, it does a neutral drain by way of some cams presetting in the transmission during agitation. The motor pauses for a few seconds after agitation (wash or rinse), then reverses direction which shifts the mechanism into neutral drain (no agitate or spin). After a timed drain (typically 2 minutes), the motor pauses again for a few seconds to allow the transmission to "drop" from neutral into spin mode, and restarts in the reverse direction so spin can proceed. Drain itself is controlled by which direction the motor runs. In the agitation direction, the pump forces the water back into the tub. In the reverse direction, it pulls the water out of the tub and to the drain. The machine will always drain whenever the motor runs in the reverse direction (unless the pump is clogged). The lid switch is tied into the "reverse" wiring of the motor to prevent the machine from running in spin (or drain) with the lid open ... thus if the lid switch is bad or not actuating, the machine will agitate but not drain/spin. Either the actuator on the edge of the lid which pushes down the switch when the lid is closed has broken, or the switch itself is bad. Visually observe if the actuator is intact. If so, press the switch down with your finger or suitable object. The switch should make a faint click when pressed. If it does not, or it does but the machine still doesn't drain/spin, then the switch itself is probably bad. Or the motor is bad for running in the reverse direction. Or the timer is bad for sending current to the motor to run in the reverse direction. But I'm betting the lid switch, it's a fairly common occurrence, is not an expensive fix, and is a DIY job for a competent handyman.

Yeah really. we have to bang, slam and slap our 1300.00 washing machines when they act up. Dear God! It is weird! Well the repair man checked the door latch thing, he took the boot off, I watched him do it and it totally looked like a pain to do. That wire thing around the boot, ugh, I mean what is that? Anyway, my washer failed to start one time since the repair. I unplugged it and plugged it back in the next day, it's worked ever since. If you had your circuit board replaced and that didn't fix the bugs, I wonder what is going on with these things? I honestly don't even think the repair people know. The first repair man that came out told me that the door latch was out, so they had to order one, I asked him what F11 was, he said thats a drain problem, that f11 only happens when the drain has too much soap from someone not using He detergent. I thought to myself thats not what I've been reading on this forum, but I didn't say anything. So the next repair man came, a differnt guy, I liked this guy better. He told me his threw an f11 on him, he said it's not necessarily a drain problem and that these machines are so complex that it could be a number of things. He told me what to do if the Duet ever stopped working and the clothes were locked in. He told me to take the boot off and there was s piece to push on the door latch and it would allow the door to open. Josephine, my Maytag (Bravo X, 700XL2) knows what to do with wet clothes. I use the rinse and spin cycle on DH's jeans most weeks, he can really get muddy. When that cycle is over (20 min) and the rinse water has spun out, I wash them using the 'bulky' setting with deeper water or it may not get residual mud from the inside of the pants legs bottoms. I would not put partially washed clothes dirty into my dryer to only have to clean the dryer. I freely admit he can get much dirtier than average laundry. (I've insisted he stand in the garage and strip more than once. No sympathy from me when he tells me he's worked all day and he's tired, he is not coming inside like that ;)) He's hiking off trail 4 days a week for his work in all kinds of weather through all kinds of terrain. Going through beaver ponds and falling off logs. My issue isn't dirty clothes not coming clean like I said above, it's only the amount of time laundry takes. We were at his sisters weekend house a while back and I put a load of towels in the older Maytag there, got to listen to the familiar sounds of laundry, big grin on my face. And 25 minutes later I was putting the washed things into the dryer, it was the first time laundry has been fun in a few years.

Ahh, sorry, I read the topic title and didn't catch all the post details clearly. You said "When it switches to the spin cycle after rinsing ..." and I mentally blocked the part "(not final spin)" because the spin after rinsing is the final spin.

The spin during the rinse sequence occurs after the wash and before the refill/agitated rinse.

Referencing this picture of a timer layout that should be similar to yours, the Rinse hashmarks are where the refill starts for the agitated deep rinse. The entire rinse "cycle" as such is a longer sequence that begins when the water drains after the wash period and involves multiple functions.

Can you post a picture of your dial at the point it stalls? Spinning is what you see the machine doing when that happens?

It's definitely the timer. The retaining pin for the knob was broken inside the cartridge and some plastic bits were rattling around inside. I managed to tap out all the debris and sprayed in some silicone lubricant for good measure but I'm getting the same result, I guess the debris has caused some permanent damage to the gears. At least I know what part to get, there's quite a few options online for under $200 and it's really easy to get in and remove the timer.
