Christmas cacti in compacted soil

Grunttruck

Greetings all,

I was doing some shopping last summer when I came across a pair of christmas cacti in the parking lot of a thrift store. They don't sell live plants, so they just tossed these two aside when someone donated them. They were left in full sun and terribly dehydrated and stressed when I got to them, and a few branches eventually fell off, but rebound once I started caring for them.

Things were going fine, however, branches once more started to fall off after a couple months. I checked the roots and while I wouldn't say they are root bound, the soil however, is really compacted.

I am thinking that perhaps breaking up the soil would give the roots some more air, but I have no idea how to go about doing that without destroying what roots are available.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to do this safely?

Thanks all
