Heat pad and heat mat

I spent all day reading blogs and forums about various heat sources to use to germinate seeds. This is my first attempt trying. I am in zone 5 and will be starting in my finished, heated basement (that gets no light). I read many opinions that a normal heat pad could work, so I dug out my wet proof heating pad and placed it in between metal baking sheets, turned it on low, and then placed my dome covered seedling tray on it. And then when I was out today at Menards, I saw a heating mat with a dome covered tray set so I bought that. The mat instructions say to not leave unattended. Is this true? I planned on having them both (pad and mat) stay on 24 hrs/day during the germination process.
