I'm thinking the shutters would look good black. Plus, those dormer windows should probably have a black line around the white trim to sort of point them up. Are you getting a door with glass panes across the top? Small squares, maybe 3 or 4 across the top? If so, that might look nice in black also, or perhaps a deep "jet" green. You need to change that single light into a pair of lantern, one on either side. Your house is an adorable little classic cape, and I really like it. If you are in the northeast where you have a snowy winter, I also suggest that you replace the narrow steps and wrought iron railings. Widen the steps to the full width of the stoop, and then have the railings come straight down from the brick wall all the way to the ground. You will need some railings to hold on to with the snow piling up there. Keep the wroughtiron black. Neat as a pin. Love your house.

A pop of color would draw you in.I love the idea of a red front door. Apparently, the color of your front door says something about the home owners. Through out history and across cultures a red front door has been a symbol. Red door means the home within is a vibrant place, full of life, energy, and excitement. In Feng Sui, a red door symbolizes the mouth of the home. By painting our door red (or any bright color that stands out) chi (positive energy) is drawn to the house. It is the entry point in which abundance and opportunities find us. The Chinese consider red to be the lucky or sacred color. Many doors are painted with a fresh coat of red just before Chinese New Year to invite good luck and happiness.

Dark blue, black and brown are not “pops of color” in my book! But maybe they are in yours. But you definitely need to get the brick taken care of first: the shutters kept the brick from aging as much as the exposed brick. I think there’s a special cleaning method for brick—make sure you use a reputable company. Are you painting the siding? If that’s the front door, it definitely needs a more impressive entrance. Probably a more substantial portico with new light. New house numbers (stylish ones) and a new mailbox (if that’s in use)..
