Need help in automated garden sprinkler

I am planning to make an automated garden sprinkler for a landscape garden shop. One of its components is detecting soil moisture level, It will be set to water the plants every morning, the soil moisture level is a back up if the soil is wet or not, especially when it rained, (quite useless to water the plant when it already rained), if the soil is not wet it will continue to water. The plants are on soil, plastic/ceramic pots or hanging(orchids). Each of them has there own area and will be watered on different times. The question is regarding the plants on pots and hanging, do I need to sample each pots, or I just sample few pots for the soil moisture level?
