Hot keys?

typing along on keyboard, hit some keys multiple times, and deleted, not always a good typist, but I do get the job done, like a bike, you don't forget really, BUT, the keyboard eventually LOCKED up, and I couldn't use it at all. I have heard the term "hot keys" keys that will do other things besides the letters etched on the top of them. can someone explain that please? Never happened to me ever, and curious as to what might have been going on.
