Heritage River Birch - companions

I'm planting a grove of 3 Heritage River Birch, but can't decide what would be best. They will be staggered, one behind the other 2 a bit with a mature oak about 30-35 feet behind them for afternoon shade.
I was considering things like Itea virginica (either Henry's Garnet or Little Henry), Clethra anifola, spicebush, maybe Viburnum? I'm at a loss, anyone seen them planted with any of these or other natives? Maybe some red or yellow twig dogwood behind the two side trees?
