someone had just asked how much I would have to charge. The size that is shown here is 43x24. I would have to charge 40 for that one. I make two that are about 31x24 and 43x16 and they would be 35 each and then there is a small one that is 16x31 and that one would be 30.

Last summer I learned how to make rugs. It is called German Braid Rug weaving. I use a 24 by 43 inch frame. It is flat like a picture frame. That is the biggest I can make and I can make smaller sizes. I use cotton material, mostly old sheets. I can get most of them for 25 or 50 cents at a thrift store. They call them drop cloths if they are not usable for on a bed. They still work for me though. It takes about 5 king to full size sheets to make a large rug. I have finished 10 of them I think. My DD has 2 of them. I gave 2 of the smaller ones away for Christmas presents. One I donated to a church raffle and one I donated for a benefit for a friend who was dying of cancer. It takes me about 12 hours to make a big one. I really enjoy doing it and it doesn't cost me a lot to do it or take up a lot of room. I found a store who will sell the rugs for me

a few years ago I wanted to start doing a new craft to take up some of my time. It couldn't cost much or take up much room. I went to the Steam Threshers reunion in Rollag MN. There was a lady there who was making these rugs. I talked to her but I never got her name of number. The next year we went back but she wasn't there. Some other ladies were doing the rugs and they said they have classes in MN. That wouldn't do me any good since I live in SD. They had the ladies email address from the year before and told me she was from Bismarck ND. That is my hometown. It took her 9 months to answer my email. We finally got together. She showed my sister and I how to make them in about 3 hours. My husband had made me the loom. He and the teacher talked together on the phone and she had emailed me some pictures of the loom. It only took him a couple of hours to make it I think.

I can make a 43 in. x 24 in. rug in about 12 hours. I make them out of old sheets. I can buy the sheets at a thrift store for 25 cents a piece. They call them drop clothes. Some have stains or tears in them, but they still work for me. I have made about 15 of them. I sold 2 of them and have donated some to fund raisers or raffles and given away some. It takes about 5 sheets to make one. They have some videos on Utube. just put in twining rugs, I get lots of compliments on them. People have said they will last 40 years. They are machine washable. I made a set of placemats with the same loom and I can make pot holders or pads to set hot kettles on.

I don't know why it is called twining. It may be because you intertwine the long strips across into up and down loops. That's the best way I can describe it. Yes it is fun and it is fun to see the finished product

I am happy to see there is interest in this. The lady who taught me learned how to do it at a blacksmithing convention he was at. It was one of the programs they had for the wives. For that they used material that was bought at Walmart for 50 cents or a dollar a yard. Since they don't have that anymore most are using sheets now. I used some valances for one of mine. They say you aren't supposed to use curtains though. The sun can cause the material to weaken. they have been made with denim. I haven't tried one of those yet. The sheets have to be at least 50% cotton or more. I have also picked them up at rummage sales. Flannel sheets will not work. There is another kind that will not work even though they are the cotton. they will not tear the way they are supposed to. I have had 2 of those and I just throw them in the garbage instead of wasting my time with them. I copied these from other posts. It was longer ago than last summer. Sorry about the repeats of some things. Since I use old sheets there are not two alike.
