Can 30''D 'counter-depth' fridge be recessed?
Comments (4)Thanks for that link Davidrol! It's nice to see I'm not alone! I was fully prepared for the fridge doors and handles to protrude in front of the counter. I never really gave it a lot of thought, but I guess I imagined 4'' or so. The manual for the 30''D model we were looking at also stipulates that the fridge have 1'' of clearance at the back, which would put this ''counter-depth'' unit a full 7'' in front of a standard counter. We are in a cold climate and the fridge would be on an exterior brick wall. I was hoping that some rigid foam insulation might do the trick, but when the best case scenario at the end of the day is reclaiming a couple of inches, all the framing and fussing really doesn't seem worth it. Comments (22)I just bought and installed the KitchenAid counter depth french door fridge. Not the supersized one. I chose it for a couple of reasons bur primarily because it was one of the few I could get without a water dispenser in the front door (though there is a discreet one inside the fridge). I hated the fact that the counter depth added about a $1000 to the price tag and worried that I would not feel the aesthetic advantage justified that price difference once I got it since I was trying to be very frugal in my purchases. I was so wrong. I am crazy about this fridge. The bottom freezer holds everything my old full depth freezer did except I can see it all so easy in the lighted space with 3 slide out layers. I can see everything I have when I open the french doors. Nothing hard to get at. Nothing out of sight. The door shelves hold tons of stuff too. I like that the sides are gray....not black...so if some of the side had to show it would blend fairly well with the stainless. Mine will not show as there will be a full panel of cabinet wood covering both sides (cabinets arrive in 2 wks). I'm having an open shelf/cubby above it to hold cookbooks. Comments (7)DamaskDi -- I owned a 30" Liebherr refrigerator with bottom freezer that was enclosed in a partition against a wall. The space had less clearance on one side than your space. The fridge has 0 clearance doors and opened against the wall. However, to be absolutely sure you want to check the specification sheet for the refrigerator. That will give you accurate information -- the information you need, not inaccurate speculation. I've linked the Design Guide below. Look for the model number. The fridge depth is 24-1/4. For semi-built in it will need some clearance at the top for ventilation -- they will tell you how much to leave but as I recall it is a minimum of 2 or 3 inches. If you have any doubts, call the company and ask. In any event I would call and ask them about installing a refrigerator next to ovens (usually not recommended but often seen) and be sure it is done properly. Check the location needed for the plug and the ice maker as well. There is a note about door clearance which will be needed to open the crispers inside. The doors have a 145 degree swing. Do yourself a favor and use the spec sheet -- there are other design guides as well. I would always call the company to verify those and be sure nothing has changed. Comments (44)blondell: I don't specifically recall, but as I face Fagor I have a wall on the left and Fagor is about 1.5-2 inches from that wall only so the door can open properly. I don't know the depth, but only the handle extends beyond my granite counter top (so that would be 25ish inches?). The right side abuts to the upper and lower cabs next to it. That side is gray, but it looks fine with my black (Absolute) and white (cabs) kitchen. I was going to box it in, but decided air flow might be compromised and it was going to make my tiny kitchen look/feel tinier. So I didn't and I'm glad. I'll be glad to check the book and report back. Re noise, the first night I did freak out when I heard this snapping/crackle/popping sound. I grabbed the manual and was relieved to know it was a normal sound for Fagor(something to do wit insulation expanding/contracting). Itr doesn't happen all the time, and it has never bothered me since. I live in a urban condo, an efficiency, and my bed is about 12 feet from the Fagor. Don't laugh; it's true! :o) I sleep right through the noise, and I have asked guests if it bothers them when it comes on, and they have't noticed it at all. I've sent you and email in case you want to discuss offline, I'll be glad to help. I also recommended the Fagor to a friend in Arlington VA whose kitchen is smaller than mine and she really loves hers, too. I've had mine for a year; my friend for about 2 months. I also got the 24" Bertazzoni gas stove if you're looking for ranges! Take care....See Moresilken1
