Can 30''D 'counter-depth' fridge be recessed?

Call me crazy, but it seems to me that a fridge 30'' deep is only counter-depth if you happen to have 30''deep counters...

Has anyone faced this problem and recessed their fridge into the space between the studs in the wall behind? It seems to me that decreased air flow might affect the operation of the unit due to heat build-up at the back.

This is not just a question of aesthetics for us. If the fridge extends beyond the counter 6'' or so, it will make access to an adjacent doorway very awkward.

We're set on not having an external water dispenser, the unit has to be either side by side or FD, and the overall depth can't be greater that approx. 26''.

Any insights are appreciated!
