Can I plant new lawn on top of an exisitng lawn?
Comments (2)A lot of people like clover. I believe they ignore the bees. My favorite buzzy insect is the paper wasp. I am nurturing a nest of them outside my back door. I like them because they clean up the caterpillars from the yard and, if I don't bother them, they don't bother me. Would you be willing to spray vinegar on the clover? You could try that on a hot, sunny day (hah, hah, Portland!). Maybe just a sunny day. You only spray the leaves, not the soil. Vinegar should kill the tops. Spray again if/when it comes back. It will come back from seed until the seed is all gone. Seeding over existing grass is done all the time, but usually in the fall when the underlying lawn has settled into a routine. In the spring you will be fighting against the clover trying to grow fast on the nutrients stored over the winter. If you try it, scalp the grass/weeds as low as you can before you start. You want to get the seed in contact with the underlying soil so the roots will grow into soil. Roots will not grow into air if the soil they sprout into is being held above the soil by other plants. What kind of grass were you thinking? I think rye is very common in the PNW. You might be able to keep the weeds out by mowing your grass at the highest setting on your mower. Tall grass shades out the weed seedlings underneath and stops them from photosynthesizing....See Moreshould I put in a new lawn in summer?
Comments (2)It's tough enough to get a new lawn to make it through the summer if you can water regularly. With watering restrictions, I'm afraid that if you put a lawn in now, you're almost sure to be doing it again late summer/early fall after the heat breaks. If I were you, I'd hold off and put up with what you've got until the fall. You might be able to make it with a small sodded area....See MoreWhen can I overseed my new lawn?
Comments (3)With hostas, nuking them from orbit is the only way to be sure. And even then, I wouldn't put money on it. You can try damping a cloth with Round Up and rubbing it on the leaves, dampening them all with the Round Up. That should take it out. This looks like a really young lawn, so it's too early to make an assumption as to how it's going to turn out (hint: I think it actually looks good for its assumed age of less than 2 months of decent growing weather). We're getting close to feeding time, but with a young lawn, I'd be gentle. Perhaps something like Milorganite would be your best choice as it won't kick the grass. A synthetic would be a bit of a stress on it. Milo can go now, synthetics should wait until the end of May. I think you're going to have a fairly nice lawn, but don't forget to water through the first summer--probably more than you'd want to, but it's only for this year. Any remaining holes can be overseeded in mid-August when night-time temperatures just begin to drop off their heights. Your assumption there is correct!...See MoreNew lawn established. When can I stop watering?
Comments (4)I overseeded with Titan RX TTTF and did the normal water routine: 1. multiple daily mistings until germination period is over; l 2. early morning watering daily for 15 minutes per zone for a week; l 3. early morning for 15 min every other day for a week; 4. early morning watering for 30 minutes every 3 days for a week; 5. early morning watering for 45-60 minutes once per week Around number 5, I started noticing winter annuals like chickweed. I've stopped watering and decided to let Mother Nature handle things. I will return to #5 for the first few weeks of spring but then I plan on watering only when the lawn shows signs of drought stress....See MoreEmbothrium
