lexington3716 I googled "invisible granite seams" and went through the Google results until I found a company that was (reasonably) close to us. These people came all the way from Baltimore, which was around 2 1/2 - 3 hrs. from us. We went to see them before committing and they created a sample seam right in front of us, spending over an hour to seam 2 pieces of granite together just as a sample to show us what they can do. The key is a multi-stop process including top polishing. Special tools are required both for polishing and to get the granite pulled together tightly enough to create the seamless effect. (Gorilla grips maybe?) We tried at least 5-6 places before a company who was able to achieve what we were looking for. A good place to start looking might be the Stone Fabricator's Alliance, who have links to members in different areas. You might also want to contact NSI Solutions (http://www.nsisolutions.com/testimonials.asp) as they have special seam phantom technology and might be able to refer you to vendors in your area who have it. Thanks for posting the Calacatta photo! I have a sample of that and have seen a Statuario slab, but I hadn't been able to find even a picture of the Calacatta pattern, which I now know I like much better than the Statuario one I've seen. As for the thin edge vs miter vs rabbet joint, the color and pattern is only on the surface, so if you just had the 1/2 thickness, the edge would be white wouldn't it? And maybe I'm misunderstanding, but I don't see how a rabbet joint would solve the problem--wouldn't everything between the horizontal surface and the beginning of the vertical slab (i.e. the curved part on Joseph's linked drawing) be solid white? I love the properties of the material (I've put a hot-from-the-oven cast iron pan on it, left staining and etching things for hours, and dug at it with a screwdriver, all with no effect), and I think it looks good too, but the white line is giving me pause.

Thanks qtcandi. We are in permitting. I live on Long Island in the summer and grew up on the island but unfortunately don't know anyone who recently redid their kitchen except my sister. She wasn't too happy with her stone and installer so I won't ask her. If I hear of anyone, I'll let you know.
