front wood door top layer peeling off

My front door gets exposed to lot of sunlight and at times some rain too. Recently I had a carpenter change the white painted front door to a wood finish, and he sanded the front door and then applied something on it which made it look good (See pic 1). However, after 6 months the top coating is completely peeling off exposing the door to outside elements but more importantly looking very ugly (see attached pic 2)

I have a feeling the carpenter used a polyurethane layer without staining it and I am thinking I have to now 1) sand the peels off, 2) apply a natural wood stain and 3) apply a top coat layer of poly urethane. I am not an expert but this is based off the reading that I have done up until now. Can you advise what the best approach is to make this front door look better and also make sure it withstands the elements?

Tough to do much easily now. Scrape off the loose stuff. Use a stripper for the entire side(orange colored 'green' stripper is fine). Strip the remainder. wash with damp rags(see stripper instructions). and dry completely.

Sand lightly to smooth the surfaces(no more than 150 grit).

Stain desired color. Be aware the stain color will fade some, depending on the final finish.

If the door were mine, I would finish with clear paint. Have done that before. Sherwin Williams(the brand I use) A100 Ultra deep tint base with no additives---no tint at all. It is a milky white when applied and dries completely clear. I have pictures if you want of walnut finished with the base.

That finish(2 coats) will protect the door wood and color more than anything else. Because it is paint, not varnish/spar varnish, or poly. Paint blocks the harmful UV rays and protects from weather.

You're going to want to sand back to bare wood and start over again (the finish that hasn't peeled off yet will soon). The finish used was a pretty clear failure, but clear finish on wood exposed to the weather is always going to require constant upkeep. You should plan on refinishing every other year.

Look at products intended for a marine environment, like a marine spar varnish. Wooden boat builders now seem to prefer a clear penetrating epoxy sealer top-coated with a two-part catalyzed polyurethane. Ordinary big box store polyurethane is not intended for outdoor use. You'd have to order on line or go to a place like West Marine to get those finishes.

Paint offers far better protection than any clear finish, sorry to say. Stain will neither hurt nor improve your results, unless it interferes with the bonding of the finish coats.

Paint stripper! Once it's clean, be sure it's sanded smooth, then wash it with Dirtex, rinse and dry. Since you're having adhesion problems, prime it with SW All Surface Primer. Then apply two coats of Acrylic Enamel. Adhere to drying and topcoat times for primer and enamels.

It seems to me that the plan needs to be revised. The center bearing wall needs to be retained where possible or posts shown in the bathroom, pantry etc. As for the off-center front door, I would center it, add sidelights, add wood columns and find another location for the hall closet. It doesn't have to be next to the front door. I would try to create a more formal entrance to the dining room. I would also move the door to the bathroom to the hall out of sight of the dining room for the comfort of guests. Is a shower really needed for this floor? I don't see a guest room.

I'll be honest and state that while I've received tons of compliments on my Thermatru stained doors (even from the home appraiser who HATED the rest of my home!) , that they look best viewed from about 4-5ft away. While they are impressed with a quite realistic grain, my 'woodworking eyes' feel that the grain is reversed from what it should be, so up close, it feels 'off' to the observer. From 4-ft away, it's like tromp l'oiel - distance makes the perspective work, and they look magnificent. I do love them. Note: Thermatru Doors ship unstained, and staining is a PITA. They don't recommend gel stain, but instead using a oil based stain. Thermatru sells their own stain kits for $100 each, but they only do 1 door and sidelites, or 2 doors. But the first coat is VERY light. So if you want a dark color, be prepared to spend some $$$. I don't have my sample stain-square with me, but I'll state that 1 coat looked AWFUL - the peach priming coat of paint was VERY visible to me. We phoned customer service and they stated that you can use ANY oil based stain, and water-based poly to topcoat them. So that's what we did, as I did 4 doors in just over 1 gallon of stain. We found using a chamois-sponge really put the layers on thinly, which made for a nice finish. Overall you aren't staining in the traditional sense, but laying thin coats over each other. This means you need non-humid weather to stain them, and HOURS of drying time in between. If you have someone doing this offsite its OK, but if you are like me and doing them yourself, budget 2 days per door minimum, and likely a week at least between staining and topcoat to ensure the oilstain layer is dry. For the dark color I wanted, it took 3-4 coats. Exterior: Interior of same door (showing effect of lighting, it looks darker)

Well...I don't want to get into the "corners are expensive" discussion. It's pretty clear that a few well chosen corners, within reason, which enhance the overall design of a house are certainly worth doing...and as far as expenses of corners, look at many of the builder's houses: they are full of corners, so obviously corners are not cost prohibiitive at all. The cry, "corners are expensive; reduce the number of corners for a better design" is simply an over-rated consumer generalization which really can't pass the test of strong design and construction. As far as what sort of design devices make sense for strong architectural design, eveything depends on the architect's intent for the design. One cannot generalize about design tools. There are probably no universally applicable design tools. For example, design tools one might use for a Colonial Revival design may be far different than those one might use for an International School design. All architects know this. I completely agree that too many and/or inappropriate details will distract from the strength of a design. This is why strong architectural design take both creativity and experience. As far as the OP's posted design, it is simply too vanilla and unappealing for me. All of the posted illustrations help to make the design stronger and more interesting; each has aspects worth further exploration. What we are seeing is the difference between a consumer posting a design, and the designs of creative and experienced professionals. This is a good thread, and I hope it's educational and helpful for the OP.

From the weathering of the bare wood, it looks like it has been going on for two years. This is 6 months? This varnish was applied in Aug 2015?

Setting that aside, it's going to need full prep, sanding away all the surviving finish and gray weathered bare wood, down to at least 150 grit. You should probably use a dark gel stain like brown mahogany, (to disguise the possible water stains which may not sand out) and then four coats of spar varnish. If this is the kind of weather the door takes in six months, you will need to recoat the door every year as maintenance.

I just stopped by that cross I mentioned and took some pictures, after it has been in place for a year. Open to the weather, on a NE corner of an intersection, facing south and about 20 feet higher than the streets.

The first picture is after painting initially.

This picture is of the cross on the 19th of February, a year later.

As you can see, there is no graying/degradation of the wood after a year of exposure.
