Too early to say. There are trees that have died over nothing, and trees that survived insults you would think would kill them. Wait and see. If you keep the tree and it turns out to be a mistake, you can always take it down later. You can't put it back up if you decide taking it down was a mistake.

An evergreen magnolia is not a tree I'd elect to have planted close to a pool. First, they drop copious amounts of leaves at all times of the year, making pool maintenance a nightmare. Second, they have a pretty aggressive, surface oriented root system and could certainly damage/lift any pool surround, coping or even the body of the pool itself , depending on construction.

I would certainly not consider removal a mistake, especially in the very tight quarters your photo illustrates. Not a good location at all for this type of tree.

Yes^...tree death (or its opposite) are not the only two possible outcomes. Often, the loss of roots will cause a later die-back of upper branches. This can take as much as five years to express itself. Even then, this doesn't necessarily mean all is lost. If I had to guess, I'd say that no, the tree will not die because of this, but its health and overall vigor may be impacted. Remember, that's just a guess.

Wouldn't even be a question if I were having a pool built at my place. You are not going to get the answer you want from here. The pool costs what 10000? That kinda investment I wouldn't take the chance. IMO, I would remove the tree today or yesterday. And if I felt guilty about removing the tree, I would plant 10 more.

If it was my tree, my pool and my garden, then I would remove the tree now.

Doesn't look too bad, should be fine, Magnoilia are not really know as concrete busters, they probably will just grow around the pool.

Southern Magnolia frequently lifts sidewalks and driveways around here, so I can imagine what they'd eventually do to a pool.

It looks "fine".......really?? What is that distance - 6' from edge of pool to fence? Common sense should tell you that is going to be too tight/narrow a setting for any large growing tree, especially next to a pool where the tree will continually drop debris.

Magnolias may not be known as "concrete busters" but they have a long and established reputation as concrete/paving "lifters". Here is what one popular website says about these trees: "dense shade and shallow roots make it impossible to grow grass beneath

I have a hard time imagining anyone who would think this is a good choice to remain in this location.

Yes I think it has to go pool was just gunnited so next it'll have go before plumbing. It is too close and am afraid roots already showing will just die anyway. Here in Houston a pool is 40k!!! And that's not a fancy one. It's small. But so hot grandm needs place for grandkids other than street. Can't take the chance of lifting coping or concrete. Thanks for advice

We can't go closer than 9ft easement. Yard is small pool is small. To us retiring here should of had it removed before started

Will be additional cost now of 350 just to remove. And workers won't have much room to work between fence and pool

cut it flush to the ground... and apply round up or stump killer.. and be done with it ... no real need to get rid of it beyond that ...

it will be a bit of a landscape challenge.. until it all rots out... but i would just cover it with mulch ... if something need be there.. put it in a pot or decorative urn ...

if you have a sawzall ... buy a tree blade ... and just start going at it... until there is one foot left.. then make the last cut ...

let me know.. if it refuses the RU ... and you need to kill future sprouts ...
