Is orange peel wall texture 'dated'?
Comments (13)Granted, smooth walls are very hard to do well, and every little nick or wave in the drywall shows. But when done well, and painted well, it's pretty amazing. And it makes the room look bigger because you lose a visual sense of where the wall actually is, especially if you use a flat finish. I just got so tired of 11 years of that knock-down collecting so much dust and dirt. Another alternative is that with each successive painting of your textured walls, the pattern disappears as the paint builds up. When we bought our house, I immediately painted the bedrooms and noticed a huge difference, especially since I used 2 coats. I didn't do the common areas, and you could see the ridges and plateaus much more easily. To each his/her own....See MoreApplying peel and stick backsplash to an uneven surface plaster wall
Comments (18)Yes the moisture problem was over 20 years ago and it was not a burst pipe. The woman above us turned her sink on and then went to her bedroom and went to sleep and forgot about it. It's flooded and came down through the wall. This caused some minor swelling to the plaster and made the paint crack and peel. There is no sheetrock there what you see is beige paint underneath a layer of yellow paint. There is no existing moisture problem. It is simply a very ugly wall. I want to put something attractive that I can easily wipe down. Peel and stick seems like the best solution since it's easy to take away if I need to. If there is ever another leak or moisture problem the entire wall will have to be torn out and fixed by the owners of the property anyway. The amount of investment to do a peel and stick for this small area is $30. I am not about to go out and spend a stack of money on this wall when I don't own the property. A lot of this is really nice advice for someone who owned the property but that is not the case here. Surface is fairly smooth I was just worried that the areas of peeling paint would interfere with the adhesion of the peel and stick and was simply asking if I should put up some type of board first, smooth out the wall with putty or just go as is. That was really my only concern whether or not the peel and stick wood actually stick to this surface. Sorry if that wasn't clear in the original post...See Moredrywall texture - orange peel vs knockdown
Comments (37)I had orange peel in my last home (Southern California) and flat in my new home (Pennsylvania). I don't know that repairs are any easier or more difficult. Flat is just a matter of smoothing the repair. Orange peel is a matter of matching the orange peel texture - too heavy or too light and it doesn't match. I saw a lot of holes repaired in homes with orange peel where they didn't bother to spray texture where the repair was made and it was quite noticeable - even with small repairs. With flat the biggest problem is if you need to use tape - it is tough to cover and keep everything smooth. Painting edges is way easier with smooth - no worry about bleeding under the tape - Orange Peel you have to tape, paint with the color you have covered with tape to fill any little holes under the tape and then paint over it with the other color to get a really clean line. I don't think either one looked inherently better than the other....See Morepeel & stick wallpaper durability
