Why are there brown spots in my Asian Pears?
Comments (6)It looks sort of like cork and it is by the surface of the pear. Each spot is something like 1/8" or so (bigger or smaller as well). I think Geraldo may have it there; bitter pit is primarily a problem on apples but I have also seen it on my asian pears. One last long shot is stink bugs, but these mainly deform the fruit and you did not mention deformed fruit. See good link below for more information on bitter pit including treatment. Comments (7)Hey Feegle! :-)) I find that adding vinegar (in doses as described in my previous message) makes for more vibrant colours - including deeper purples and more intense reds (if there is such a thing!). I do grow under lights which also makes a difference to the intensity of the colours. I guess what you do depends on whether your conditions are more alkaline or acidic. For my potting mixture I use Schultz's Moisture Plus potting soil, vermiculite, and sponge rock (not perlite)in more or less 1/3 each combinations - perhaps a bit less soil. I guess - I was not made to measure! LOL! I also add some charcoal to sweeten the mix. My guess is my mixture is probably quite neutral. I grow a lot of my AV's in Oyama planters and now I've started to use Dandy pots (which means wicking) for some of my semi's and mini's so my potting mixture has to be quite light. So far so good! Once again, this is stuff that I do. I can't promise that it will work for everyone. I like trying different things. Right now I have Chantaspring and Optimara's Little Crystal wicked in little teapots. The holders that they're planted in are only about 3/4" high and about 1 1/2" across. I'm thinking of putting Always Pink in one as well. Enough rambling from me - it's cold, windy and miserable out, so that's my excuse! Joan...See MoreWhy does my AV change color?
Comments (6)Here's a good description of birthmarking that I got from an AVAVS article. (I've included the link to the entire article below it if you want to read more. It's all about variegated foliage.) Birthmarks This isn’t a form of variegation in foliage but simply a birthmark. It’s a genetic condition that can be found on the underside of leaves. An easy example is to notice that the underside of silver under sided leaf exhibits red staining or markings. This is often found in multicolored blooming varieties. By nature it states genetically instability, hybridizers usually set these plants apart for future hybridizations programs. It usually makes the prettiest plant (but may not always bloom or grow to specifications) as more color in the leaves usually means more color in the blooms also. http://www.avavs.com/varifs.pdf I think what we can gather from this is that Laura's Little Kunzite is exhibiting genetic instability. Now, I've not grown this variety and I don't know it this is common in this plant, but AV's do some very wonderful and interesting things when they make these changes (sporting.) Of course, it can also be very annoying if you liked the variety the way it was and wanted it to stay that way, LOL. But I'd keep an eye on this one and see what it decides to become. It is very interesting!...See MoreScorched leaves, black spots and bronzing on my Cape Fear:why?
Comments (9)I don't grow Kiowa or Cape Fear so I can't help much. I have 30 other varieties, though, and there are so many small differences between them that it is hard to say what this might be. In the fall here, the leaves start to deteriorate by early September because of disease and insect issues but those might not apply to you at your location. The good news is that the tree will come back fine next spring with most of the things on your list. Just make sure it has enough water. Leaf diseases this time of year are not a big deal. Just keep soil moist...See Morefortyseven_gw
