Taco Bells New Quesolupa

Not sure if I got the name right, but I tried one today. It is $2.99 in our area. That is not a tortilla that is the base. It is pita bread stuffed with cheese. Then it is folded in half like a taco and stuffed with your choice of chicken, beef or steak, tomato and lettuce. It is more filling than a taco, but I'll stick with my Crunchy Taco Supreme for now.

I don't know about Taco Bell (fast food has its own brand of creativity), but a chalupa is a fried, Southern Mexican, boat shaped, molded flatbread made of masa. It looks like the word is combined from that and the word for cheese.

It was rolled out for the Super Bowl apparently. So I tried it. Rather bready.

It's hard to describe, but the oil smooths the taste of the peppers. Sort of takes off that rough edge of "rawness", if that makes sense. Other types of peppers marinated in oil are popular in Italian neighborhoods on an antipasto plate or with Italian beef, on sandwiches, hot dogs, you name it - they eat them on almost everything, including pizza. The pickled jalapenos would be good on nachos, in tacos, burritos, quesadillas and other Mexican foods. They are still vinegary, but I like the ones in oil better (I did until my stomach rebelled - I can't eat spicy peppers anymore). Hope that helps.

I grew up eating tacos and tortillas, but not from fast food restaurants. Here in L.A., I like El Abajeno in Mar Vista (typical family style Mexican), and there are plenty of regional Mexican restaurants here (especially Oaxacan) that I like, and even a couple of Yucatecan restaurants. Yucatecan food is my favorite in Mexico, and Oaxacan (especially in Oaxaca) is low on the list, but I'm able to find some exceptions. MacArthur Park is a good place to find tamales, and there are several local companies that make gourmet tamales that I like, but they can get expensive. I don't know that much about Taco Bell, except that it began in California and I think has food that is similar to Tex-Mex. Growing up in Texas I went to locally owned Mexican restaurants - I don't remember chain Mexican restaurants from when I was a child, but that was forever ago. Okay, I admit it. I overreacted. I guess I was just excited about doing something for someone and never hearing back I got my feelings hurt. I'm sorry if I upset anyone or made anyone scratch their head... And I can understand that some folks might be leery about giving any personal info out to a 'virtual' friend. I've met so many nice people over the internet in various forums..gardening, cooking, tomatoes, etc. that I forget there could be people that are more private about certain things. It's okay. I won't stop trying to make friends and yes I could be making up all this in my head and sonopoly is just away for the weekend! ....alright...back to your regular scheduled programming...

My DH brought me to my first Taco Bell which was in Long Beach. We had just moved in, he took our only car to work as I scrubbed our apartment. We had no food in the place, so he came home to take me to lunch there. I thought I was in heaven with their basic taco. I still love their Taco Supremes, but I skip the sauce because they are too messy to eat already. Two Taco Supremes and a Dr. Pepper makes my favorite fast food lunch.

I looked up the product, it does look fried.

I don't like Taco Bell or any of the other chains. There are enough hole-in-the-wall taquerias around in my area that a quick and real Mexican food item is never too hard to find.

A chalupa was traditionally used as a base for tostadas. It is basically a corn tortilla shaped and deep fried to be puffy. A thicker version which would be breadier is a sope.

I like Taco Bell but it isn't really Mexican food at all. Back in the day they had the Encherito that was built with a corn tortilla, sauced and garnished with olives. It was pretty close to an enchilada except for the toned down sauce. then they ruined the whole concept by using flour tortillas. These days I stick to their soft tacos (again not properly made with corn), burritos and occasionally nachos.

Put me down for the crunchy taco supreme, too. The few times I treat myself to Taco Bell, I go with what I know I love.

Damn, hate that I love those tacos so much.

Nachos bell grande or the regular crunchy taco. On the rare occasion I grab something there. When they first opened taco bell they had a taco meat burger, just a small hamburger bun filled with a scoop of their taco meat and some grated cheese, I loved those but they disappeared long long time ago.
