Possible furnace scam? Please judge for me
Comments (6)When I read the first paragraph about the heat exchanger crack, I thought this was going to be the classic scare tactic for replacing a furnace. You could have a small crack, but it seems the tech was not concerned about it. It is difficult to say what happened with the wire. The description of events sounds like the setting for a scam. But the strange thing is he only charged $50 to return to your house. You are not going to get any HVAC tech to come to your house to do a repair for $50. I think one of the wires on the control board either broke of became disconnected while he was inspecting your furnace. The wires are very thin and held by a screw. It is possible if you brush up against one of them then could become loose or break. The wires usually are longer than they need to be, so it is easy to either reattach it, or cut off the broken piece, strip back the insulation and reattach it to the screw. It is takes a minute once you figure out the problem. I have no idea why he would write down 1.5 hours. Maybe he did not want go get in trouble with his boss for causing the problem in the first place. You could have insisted he caused the problem, but it is difficult to prove. You are fortunate he only asked for $50. Things like this happen, but his big mistake was not verifying the furnace was working before he left your house. For this reason I would have second thoughts about using him again....See MorePossible phone scam - has anyone had one of these?
Comments (14)Giving out your number isn't the problem. They use auto-dialers, they just go down the list. I have 2 cell phones and home line listed with Do not call. When I get a number I don't recognize, I don't answer. I can then use the info saved by phone logs, to enter that info on Do Not call.gov and turn them in. I got a call at 5 to 7 in the morning, didn't have my glasses on, so I answered it. Robo call in Spanish. will add that one when I go to Do Not Call. I wait a week, and add several calls a week. I read somewhere, it's better to not answer if you don't recognize the call number, they will not keep calling a number that doesn't answer....See MorePossible CL scam
Comments (14)You didn't give him any of the info requested did you? I think I would keep an eye on your ID and any auctions within 25 miles of you, plus go in & change your passwords. Did you click on any links in the email or reply to his email? That's the only way I can think of that would give him access to your passwords....See MoreThis is a new one for me
Comments (12)Robo calls dial numbers in order sequentially, I'm not sure why you say what you did. Do you have a basis for the comment? They don't "get" your number from somewhere, a number is a number. My wife's cell phone and mine have numerically sequential numbers, her's is the lower number. Sometimes it's happened that her phone rings, then not too much later mine will. Blocking such numbers works temporarily but the dialers change the numbers they spoof regularly. Really, aren't there better things to be concerned with/worry about? Such calls are annoying only if you allow them to be. Do some of you get so annoyed if a loud car or motorcycle drives down your street? How about if someone is talking too loudly in public? It's not that big a deal....See MoreUser
