Color blind accountants can't see red ink.

I've heard that the reason we currently use < and > to indicate losses and negative numbers in accounting is because an accountant was color blind and couldn't distinguish between red ink and black ink.

I believe it. It's a credible source.

But, I've never been able to find any source on the internet about it.

I see there are some professional accountants here.

You ever hear of that? Got a source for me?
