Comments (20)I'm with you, Ann. I never liked cold milk & dry cereal when I was a kid. And I didn't like sweet things for breakfast either. Pancakes & waffles never appealed to me. My mom always made something savory for my breakfast on school days. I'm also not a fan of the "just get used to it" club. There's a danger that the sense of deprivation will be so strong that it will eventually undermine any efforts to improve the diet -- all motivation will be lost. I think it's really important, when someone is on a restricted diet of some kind, to find foods that the person really enjoys AND are within the limitations. I think the idea of finding other breakfast foods that your husband can enjoy is a good one. I'm speaking from experience because my husband is on a sodium-restricted diet. Believe me, I work my tail off coming up with tasty low salt versions of the salt laden foods he used to enjoy. Otherwise, he wouldn't be able to stand such a limited diet. Making the switch from half & half to skim milk is probably too drastic. Perhaps just going down one notch to whole milk for a while might be helpful. As others have suggested, a slow & gradual change might be best. Then go down to 2%. That might be a far as you can take it. Once you get below 2% milk, you lose a lot of flavor & texture....See Moreavoiding dairy... milk substitute in coffee??
Comments (24)Just to report in... tish, I bought the So-Delicious in vanilla flavor and thought it was OK. Then based on another recommendation, tried the chocolate Almond Breeze in my coffee and that was yummy! I really don't care about cheese. DH couldn't live without it, but I've never been a huge fan -- although I do like pizza, so that's a tough one. And I don't care about ice cream in the winter months... but talk to me again in June. I probably will never completely eliminate all dairy, but I can definitely cut back significantly. In the end, I may just go back to regular old milk in my coffee, and I may have the occasional cheese pizza, etc. I was somewhere today where there were limited options for lunch, so I "had" to have a ham sandwich. I don't know what I would have done if I was really a vegetarian (instead of someone trying to impersonate a vegetarian for a week). Take the ham out of the sandwich, I guess, or go hungry!...See MorePenzey's Pear Ginger Coffee Cake - has anyone made it?
Comments (15)Lpink, Oh, tart cherries! Back in my childhood in Ohio there was a tree in our backyard so I fondly remember wonderful cherry pies, and miss being able to get them here in the south. I love warm cherry pie (ala mode, of course) and was distressed at having to buy cans of tart cherries at an exhorbitant price, with very few cherries floating around in the can. Hmmm. Never really thought about substituting sour cream or yogurt for buttermilk. I hate having to waste most of a quart of buttermilk in order to make my mom's old cake recipe, then noticed cans of powdered buttermilk on the store shelves, so I've been using that for quite a while and don't notice any difference. . . except when I didn't sift out the little hard lumps which occurred while stored in the refrigerator....See More"Water station" at coffee station...has anyone done this?
Comments (31)Thank you everyone for weighing in. We decided to put in a small sink. More useful, less complicated and I think we'll still have room for everything else that goes on that counter. I agree that a third sink seems excessive, IS excessive, but it's a big kitchen in a big beach house so why not?! Dmpsd, my brood isn't going to be happy with losing water and ice on the door either! They use it all of the time! But I didn't want a 48" fridge so they'll have to adjust. First world problems, I know! :) Eam44, I'll take a look at that book. Thanks. It seems odd to me that I should have arthritis is almost every joint. Seeing a rheumatologist next month to investigate non rheumatoid spondyloarthropathies. Hopefully we'll get to the bottom of this....See MoreJanusz Szymczak
