For all of you looking for Kordes roses etc.

I just thought that some of you might be interested as I have read several posts where people mentioned that they find it difficult to obtain Kordes roses. I usually get monthly newsletters from Ludwig's Roses (who is the main rose supplier. grower and breeder in South Africa) and also follow them on various rose groups on Facebook. It appears as if he (or his daughter - Anja Taschner) is currently opening a Ludwig's Roses nursery in Phoenix, Arizona as well. As over here in South Africa he sells numerous roses from Kordes as well as Meilland, Harkness, Barni etc. I thought I might just as well give you guys a heads up. It is possible that they might be able to procure some roses that might not always have been so easy to find in the USA. Back here his roses are simply the best quality available ( I bought at least 80 - 90 % of my 200 roses from Ludwig) and Ludwig's opinion on specific roses are always spot on. Wow! That will be awesome!! I looked at the website and good gravy there's lots of beauties on there. The website for the states says coming soon so I def see more roses I have no room for in my future!! Judy

Thanks so much for this info, Liezel! They opened for business yesterday in Phoenix. Hope they do mail orders this season. Looks like their website (coming soon) will be http://ludwigsroses.com/ Keeping an eye out for the launch.

I love the Tantau roses I've acquired so far. I have three Bernstein-Rose (the full name) bushes which are small plants whose blooms look a lot like Julia Child's. The blooms are the same size as Julia's, but the plants are way smaller. I have them located on a lower level below my two JCs to kind of echo the Julias. B-R is very healthy with dark shiny green leaves and a nice compact growth habit. It's never supposed to have much size which is what I wanted in the small spaces they grow in. I also have had two stunning Tantau Ascot grandiflora roses for a year which I have been raving about for a while. The bareroot plants took off like rockets and are always in bloom. I've got one kordes fairytale rose - "Climb. Cinderella". The foliage is VERY impressive: glossy, clean, and healthy and looks completely different to my other DA roses. This is my first kordes floribunda rose and Cinderella has about 6-8 flowering buds in a cluster. However, the apple scent is mild to medium and sometimes, I couldn't smell anything. The flowers last for a long time compare to DA's. I can clearly see why Cinderella had won several international awards because the flowers do look really "cute" in a vase - but in the garden Cinderella seems to be like another ordinary pink rose. If I have a house, I would grow a set of David Austin roses in the front yard. I don't mind their delicate petals. I just love that light pastel, cup-shaped look. Just imagine having people from your neighborhood walking pass your house and ABLE to smell something - I'm sure you'll get lots of compliments from them. I've walked passed several houses in my area, most of them grow roses that I can't smell anything. The ones that I can smell would usually leave a good impression to my mind. I love Dark Desire. I got it as a tiny band from Chamblees this year. It has grown quite nicely and has bloomed pretty good. It currently does not get much sun. I normally put my roses in pots and let them get an established root system before I put them in the ground since i have to worry about nematodes. However, in the shade it has not had any blackspot or mildew. However, I am in zone 10b in South Florida. I grew up in Missouri and I know your zone is totally different.

Altorama Ray, I'm still here just waiting for spring, lol. I lost quite a few roses over this winter so I'm evaluating what to do next. I'll definitely be downsizing my garden though, it's getting to be a bit too much work and the roses struggle for lack of sun. Most of my Austins did well but I lost quite a few of the Kordes roses. Madame Anisette is really tough and Summer Romance came through great as did Earth Angel but most are struggling. I even had a lot of damage to my laurel, rhodi's and holly this year. I'm starting to plant more hydrangeas since they seem to like my particular gardening environment much better, especially the panicles. Not quite roses though :-( I hope you fared better in your end of the state. Your roses are breathtaking. Sharon

Holy cow! If the USA branch gets all the roses they have in South Africa... I'm gonna be in big trouble right along with you guys! Gonna hafta peruse the main website when I get to my shop today. Don't have time to see it all this morning. One rose I did see that I hope they will offer here, is ALLELUIA. Mine died last yr and nobody in the US or Canada has it anymore!

My pleasure :-) I really hope some of you can benefit from it. SoFL, I think that they might possibly just do mail order as they do it over here. Beth, yes; Alleluia is very special for me too - it was one of my very first roses along with Memoire, Blue Moon, Black Pearl and Winter Magic. Modestgoddess, Purple Lodge is lovely! It grows on the road to Ludwig's nursery close to my home and is almost a blackish purple at times. I have stopped my car more than once to admire it. Diane, keeping my fingers crossed. I must say I secretly hope he will be able to bring some of your American beauties "home" as well - Annie Laurie McDowell immediately comes to mind, as does a few others.

If he brings all his roses to the States, I'm in BIG trouble. I really like orange/orange yellow blend HT's with good form. They are few and far between her in the U.S. I looked at the list yesterday and just dreamed. I'll keep checking.

I'm really not sure. I usually plant my grafts below soil level so they end up own root anyways.
