Any suggestions/changes you'd make?
This is going to be our kitchen for the forseeable future, so I want it to be right! Any thoughts/suggestions for changes from those who've already done kitchen renos? If I want to do a couple glass doors (seeded if poss) which would you choose?

Comments (28)@HU-892358370 did you use straight rubbing alcohol (70% or higher?) and did you dilute it at all? I just moved into a new apartment and the wood laminate floors throughout are sticky, no matter how much I clean! It is gross. I was about to try vinegar and water but saw your post about alcohol. I have the type of flat mop with the removable/washable microfiber heads or "socks" so I think this would be fairly easy for me to try. Just want to avoid damaging floors in a rental, obviously. I am hoping it is mainly soap residue, but I can see drip spots in one area that are super glossy and won't wash up. Wondering if whomever cleaned the apartment before I moved in used a polish or wax inappropriate for laminate floors compounding the problem. Comments (14)Cupofkindness What has finally worked for me is having daily tasks: I made a table using Word and put the tasks under each day of the week and stuck it on the wall in my familyroom. I don't look at it much now, as I have the routine ingrained. DAILY: clothes meals swish and swipe each bathroom (DD8 often will do the main) clean kitchen after each meal- any dishes that won't fit in the DW are hand washed basic tidy up each day DD8 bedroom tidy up I have certain tasks on certain days: WEEKLY: Monday is the floors Tuesday is change bedding and ironing Wednesday is bathrooms and towels Thursday is dust and cobwebs Friday is floors and ironing Weekends- gardening How I worked out my weekly tasks was in reflection of the day- eg Monday the chn have swimming and we get home late- so I want and easy day. Wednesday is my day off, so I have the time to do the bathrooms. MENU: I follow a specific menu plan which is a six week rotating cycle. (Again, consider daily needs- eg Monday is my busy day so I often choose fish and salad for that day as it is quick to prepare.) DH is a computer nerd and used Access to make a menu/grocery program- each week he selects eg: 'Week 4' and the menu for week 4 generates a grocery list- with a quick check of the pantry/fridge we know what we need. The grocery list also includes store items (eg flour) and cleaning products (eg washing powder). One we check items as a quantity or a zero the program generates a grocery list. Now this is my super nerd hubby- the list is in aisle order and shelf order as you go down the aisle of our local grocery store. Sweet! Sometimes I miss the old style of hit and miss cooking days (... mince... hmmm, do I have a tin of tomatoes? oh a carrot!... any basil? yes! Spaghetti? no... oh well penne will do!). But overall, I love the fact that I can tell you that next Sunday I am having a beef roast with roasted beetroot, garlic, carrots, sweet potato and broccoli. With fruit and yoghurt for dessert! My time organiser is my regular calendar- I bought one with a column for each child (harder for you I realise). I told them all- if it isn't on the calendar it won't happen. Comments (4)Since you don't want to make any structural changes, I think all you can do is remove the wallpaper, paint, and add some great towels and maybe art. I don't dislike the picture that I can see, but it doesn't seem special with everything else. I wouldn't paint laminate cabinets that are in good condition. What do you consider "updated" to look like? That would help this board in helping you select a paint color for the walls....See More

8 years agoI'd make a lot of changes. To be blunt, I don't think your KD did you any favors and I would hate working in your kitchen. Sorry. It looks fairly nice but it is quite dysfunctional.
Look at how all of your real work spaces are in a small part of your kitchen. Clean and prep totally overlap. Only one person can be working here at a time. The corner makes this especially true. So this is truly a one-worker kitchen. Nobody can help clean while someone cooks. Or prep while someone is cleaning. Not without being super-crunched together. The cooktop is in a fairly narrow traffic pathway which isn't safe and could be quite annoying to the cook if a lot of traffic is going on behind while he/she is concentrating on hot items.
This plan probably isn't the best one for your space either but it's a big improvement. This plan is definitely a first draft and moves you to a more functional plan but it still needs improvement. And I didn't give you a place for your microwave.
Your work zones are a bit more spread out so, if you get a bigger sink, someone can clean on one side while someone uses the other side of the sink and that stretch of counter for prepping. The cooktop is more out of the traffic paths so it's better protected. I gave you a nice big window along that wall but I'm now realizing that you don't have good, nearby dish storage by the DW so you would probably want to make the window narrower and have an upper over the DW.
Where do doors A and B go? Can they be moved? If they can both be brought more into the lower left corner, or even if just one of them can be, it will allow for creating a MUCH better kitchen.
