My first Hoya -- bella or lacunosa?
Comments (5)Yeah, I did some research and it's lacunosa. Thanks, guys. If I went from a nice cozy FL greenhouse, got stuck on a dark, crowded, unheated truck in March, stuck in a cold, dark spot, then transported to a warmer (60s at the moment) place and given a tepid shower, I'd drop *my* flowers, I'll tell ya. Pirate Girl, I used to hang out at the AV forum. I have pH difficulties, and sadly dumped all my AVs. Now I'm growing *everything* else; orchids, mini Begonias, an Episcia, some Chirita tamianas, mini Sinningias, and my first Cryptanthus, among others. :-) At least these plants like me. Comments (39)Pug: I'm so glad you agree. ^_~ At least this time of year they are kind of appropriate looking: like a big green spider hanging in the window. Mitzicos: You're welcome! Unfortunately, carnosas are by far the most common hoya here, as well. I love them, but it seems a little sad to constantly be informing people that their first hoya isn't going to bloom for nearly a decade. :X Grrr: I believe the exposure Kelly describes is indeed ideal. Hoya bella prefers a long exposure, and although it can burn in direct afternoon light, a protected S or W window is best. As you point out, you really have to stay on top of it to keep it hydrated and avoid problems. It's just not as tolerant of drying out as some Hoyas....See MoreHoya polyneura blooms and bud updates
Comments (16)Absolutely STUNNING pix!!!! Kelly, I've not gotten this one to bloom yet. Way To Go! Love your grow area, the lights (and your nice tidy house!). Denise, now I'm doublely intimidated... you have a beautiful home and such wonderful plants! Your second picture, do you have those Pella blinds that drop between the glass? I see glass, but I see blinds of some type on the other side of the glass... ? And how CLEVER is that, to attach a trellis to the interior window frame!!!!? Denise, your home has architectural detail that I would sell most of my plants for! That door looks like maple, and the woodwork around your spectacular windows is wonderful. Thank You from a fan for Never Painting Them! Both of your homes are wonderful. Your plants make me jealous. I am SO going to bug DH for a hanging set up in my bathroom. Older, California homes with awnings do NOT provide light.... Thank You So Much for posting those snap shots of your lives and homes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...See MoreHoya nummularioides, lacunosa, bella
Comments (15)Golden - I can't walk into any of my local garden centres or supermarkets and find Hoyas either, so you're not alone. I did use to have a garden centre that stocked the variegated Hoya carnosa, carnosa and australis, but I moved away from there. Now I have to wait until they're advertised on Ebay. I'm quite excited because it's started to be time for them to come back online and I've spotted one I want! Must remember to not spend all my money on plants... ah well! And I've never seen a European order to David Liddle - I'm sure they happen, but I've never been involved, so I'm not sure whether I'll ever get a package of plants from Australia!...See MoreUser
