My first Hoya -- bella or lacunosa?

Hi. I picked up a Hoya at Target on Sat. It's an E.A. so it was labeled; Hoya 'Mini Waxleaf" *Hoya bella* variety #145. I just went to their web site and #145 is 'H. lacunosa'.

I'm a Gesneriad gal, and so unfamiliar with Hoya species. Is it one or the other, or both?

Sadly, it has buds, which I'm pretty sure it'll drop any minute. Not to mention cold damage; Target had it outside in a deeply shaded area, where it's been getting into the 40's F.

Hi Korina,

If its an EA plant...my best guess is its a Lacunosa. I bought one from them, and that is exactly how it was labelled...and it was a Lacunosa. As far as I know they don't sell Bella. As far as your buds blasting, don't give up! My lacunosa is outside in Fl, I've left mine outside when temps get in the mid to low 40's and it has not suffered. I bring them inside when its forcasted to below 42Â°. Not to say that it won't blast...changing its location from the store to your house and different growing/climate enviroments, but you never know! Good luck!

I think Pug is right abt this. I checked the EA site, there's no mention of Bella, whereas they refer to Lacunosa as mini-waxleaf.

Also, Bella's leaves tend to be spear shaped, Lacunosa's are not.

Perhaps if you do an Image search for each, you'll see the difference in the leaves.

Have you checked for bugs? It sounds like it could be infested with something. I have lots of Hoyas under florescent lights and when they grow too close to the light tubes the leaves turn yellow and burn but they don't fall off like that. I have never grown lacunosa like that as it in my experience likes shade. So maybe you should move it... but check for bugs first so you don't spread it around. I'd keep the cuttings together to make a nicer, more dense plant as the cuttings grow bigger. Both lacunosa and bella has flowered very early for me. Once their roots were well established they started flowering... I'd say after a few months. /Maggie

Hi Ann, I just bought a Lacunosa yesterday and for what its worth, I also just repotted(removed 90% of the old very wet EA Peat soil). I repotted it in the original 8" pot that it came in...I have done this with all the EA hoyas I ever bought. I know we don't live in the same zone, but I don't like the EA soil, and replaced it with a very fast draining soil. It will be living outside under an Oak tree 95% of the time. Our rainy season is in the summer(if we're lucky...I hope we get a lot of rain) we are in severe drought right now! I can't afford to leave it in that wet Peat soil getting rained on often, so I had no choice but to remove and change the soil. You and I will might be in the same boat, as I wasn't aware that Lacunosa's roots are sensitive, so I will be keeping a close eye on my plant also. This was w/out a doubt one of the hardest one to repot, very messy process, LOL... Mine was labeled "Hoya Snow Caps, Lacunosa Alba", its the speckled version of yours...Wally world special for $10. I sure hope Hoyas are making the rounds again. I would like H. bella if it shows up. Every time I go to a garden center , I 'scope out' the foliage , just in case. EA have excellent quality foliage , but they are 'out to lunch' on some of their labelling !! Florajilly

Heuschkeliana (spring/summer), tsangii (spring-fall), memoria (year round), pusilla (year round), chinghungensis (year round), endauensis (spring-fall), panchoi (year round), fitchii (spring-fall), davidcummingii (year round), diptera (summer), polyneura (spring, for me, but can be year round), lithophytica (year round, prefers summer to bloom), carmelae (year round), nummularioides (fall), pandurata (colder weather/winter-not freezing, but requires a nighttime temp drop of 10-15 degrees to bloom) . Not all bloom year round, but they all bloom at some point during the year.

Yeah, I did some research and it's lacunosa. Thanks, guys.

If I went from a nice cozy FL greenhouse, got stuck on a dark, crowded, unheated truck in March, stuck in a cold, dark spot, then transported to a warmer (60s at the moment) place and given a tepid shower, I'd drop *my* flowers, I'll tell ya.

Pirate Girl, I used to hang out at the AV forum. I have pH difficulties, and sadly dumped all my AVs. Now I'm growing *everything* else; orchids, mini Begonias, an Episcia, some Chirita tamianas, mini Sinningias, and my first Cryptanthus, among others. :-) At least these plants like me.

I too used to be on the AV forum. I was quite the AV enthusiast a few years ago, but after I moved in '04, all but one of my beloved AV's died. Here is what my collection used to look like:

Hi Tammy,

Very nice AV's...I've had a couple here and there, but for some reason they just don't do well for me. I have one now that is looking pretty bad. I think after this one, I will just stick to Hoyas, Jades and Succulents. I have much better luck with them.
