yet another newbie question
Comments (19)Rose - I just joined my first swap, for commercial seeds, on the exchange side-haven't traded any plants, although would like to try. I'm still exploring all the different forums. And YES, WSing WILL CHANGE ALL THAT!! Wait till you see the root systems on these seedlings! And your germination rate increases by at least 70% I went from 30-40 containers last year, to 147 this year, because I KNOW it works!! Kare - "treating myself" is exactly the right phrase! I used to treat myself to one "over the limit" plant each fall-got laid off last year, so it didn't happen last fall. However! The "Rozanne" is on the list for next year!Did you get yours at a nursery or online? I'm going to start my trade list on my page, this fall, when I have something to trade. Maybe I'll put the Roseanne on the plants wanted section. Although I don't know if I'll have anything that good to trade. Gotta go clean my house!! Shirley!...See MoreAnother Newbie Question
Comments (6)Hi there and welcome. Brugs are easier than most plants I grow. They come back from almost anything except freezing. The good news is your brug might still have time to bloom this fall before frost. Mine aren't blooming right now anyway, they are waiting for cooling temps. Just to be sure, more sun in August in Texas doesn't mean full sun on the southwest side of the house, but something less like bright sun filtered by a tree or another plant....See Moreanother newbie question...how to catalogue?
Comments (7)With over 500 hostas, having naming plates is a must. I got behind last year and am struggling with the names of tons of them that lost the plastic markers over the winter or the name faded from using a Sharpie to mark them. I keep a spreadsheet that indicates the date purchased, where I bought it, and how much I paid for it (but not total on amount paid since that would probably send me into shock). I also have a column for eye count for each year. I added a column for which garden bed the hosta is in this year. Hopefully, by the end of next week, I'll have it updated and will be able to deduce what my NO ID's are by the ones left without a garden name in them. I have a file folder for each garden and put shots of the gardens in those folders. Then I have a file folder for hostas and inside that folder have a folder for each hosta. I usually keep the folder sorted by name, but will sort it by date modified so I can see which hosta I haven't got a picture of for the year. I name each picture by the cultivar and the date taken. For example: Vim and Vigor 2013 05 30 This way you can view through each hosta by date and see it's changes. I use Picasa 3 from (free from google) to crop the pictures and add text. Picasa has a great system to catalog your pictures if you want to use it. I don't mark my duplicates if they are all together. For instance, I have a border of Golden Tiara's, they not marked. However, I have a Liberty in the front and one in the back. They're both marked. It helps when you're looking for them when they come up in the spring. My recommendation is to START NOW before it becomes unmanageable. I would be in a heap of trouble with my NOID's had I not started my spreadsheet when I only had 50 hostas. Comments (2)I used lots of grass clippings I got from our local rec dept for 3 years. It works great. Just a few things I've learned from experience. I applied them fresh in layers usually 2-3 inches deep usually. If I had more than I needed I just piled them close to where I would use them and let them start decomposing. The grass I got had very little Bermuda. If it has any Bermuda I learned the hard way. It is best to make sure you stir it and make sure it dries out completely or pile them up and let them decompose and only apply those that are decomposed. Or you will fight Bermuda. The clippings I was getting had very little Bermuda in it and I still had troubles. If you are just using your own clippings you will know if you have sprayed. After spraying I wouldn't use the clippings for at least one cutting. If using clippings from another source I would ask them to tell you when they sprayed and tell them you don't want them for a cutting or two after wards. Last year after a new rec manager took over he didn't tell me when they sprayed and I felt I had some problems. So I'm no longer using outside clippings. Otherwise like George said they are wonderful. They cut down on weeding and watering. I'm using loose hay and straw this summer. Have plenty of both. Again like George said you will notice a big improvement in your soil. Jay...See Moregrammyp
