Another Newbie Question

Hi,

I am having my first experience with Brugs, having bought 4 early this spring. I gave two away to friends, and planted the other two in large pots. Everything was looking great, had some holes in the leaves due to some sort of worm that I removed. Then they started looking like they had red spider so I sprayed with Bayer.

I was out of town for a few days, when I returned the largest plant had no leaves at all! However, it does look like it's trying to grow new leaves, and the smaller plant looks okay. The plants do get a little sun in the early afternoon but for the most part are in open shade on my patio. My friends are having a hard time with their plants too, we are all getting pretty discouraged.

Does this sound perhaps like overwatering or underwatering?Would love any advice from the experts out there, as sure do want to learn to grow these beauties!

If your plants are in good well draining soil it's almost impossible to over-water during the growing season. They do need more sun, especially full am sun but shade shouldn't cause them to drop their foliage. Can you post a pic? Brugs are pretty hardy and will regrow even if completely defoliated but you want to know what caused it to begin with so it doesn't happen again.

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately I can't post a picture, but the leaves on the stalk seem to be actively growing. It now has a "Y" on top.

Rose - I just joined my first swap,for commercial seeds, on the exchange side-haven't traded any plants, although would like to try. I'm still exploring all the different forums. And YES, WSing WILL CHANGE ALL THAT!! Wait till you see the root systems on these seedlings! And your germination rate increases by at least 70% I went from 30-40 containers last year, to 147 this year, because I KNOW it works!! Kare - "treating myself" is exactly the right phrase! I used to treat myself to one "over the limit" plant each fall-got laid off last year, so it didn't happen last fall. However! The "Rozanne" is on the list for next year!Did you get yours at a nursery or online? I'm going to start my trade list on my page, this fall, when I have something to trade. Maybe I'll put the Roseanne on the plants wanted section. Although I don't know if I'll have anything that good to trade. Gotta go clean my house!! Shirley!

Many Clematis are too big for a mailbox though they are often planted there. I'd only do one. you could put two on a lamp post. I'd do two different if it was me...

Here is my two cents worth. I have bought a few daylilies from the Lily Auction. First look where they are coming from. I understand southern growers are apt to have the dreaded "rust". You don't want that. I then look how much shipping costs are. I alway try to buy several at a time to save on shipping. I also look at his past record. He/she should have a near 100% approval rating. I am in Zone 7 North Ga. but pretty close to Zone 6. We get weather no colder than -5. I keep my lilies mulched with mini pine bark. I would buy from any of the states around me, Alabama, TN., Mississippi, but I also buy from further north, Ohio, PA, etc. I bought two from abundadantlilies or something like that and he was great to deal with. bk, It's your quilt. You can do anything you want with it. But if your blocks are 12 1/2" (is this finished or before you put them together?) times 3 wide that would make at least 36" wide. Then if you add 3" borders, that's another 6" (3" on either side) so you're up to 42". Or, you can put in more than one border to make it whatever width you want, maybe a 1" and a 3" to accentuate the quilt top.

It should recover.. I agree with the More Sun... I came home to one that the whole top 8" of leaves had been eaten..Not sure just was piggin out but they are coming back just fine.. Good Luck with yours.. Oh and Welcome!!! I look forward to seeing you around..

Hi there and welcome. Brugs are easier than most plants I grow. They come back from almost anything except freezing. The good news is your brug might still have time to bloom this fall before frost. Mine aren't blooming right now anyway, they are waiting for cooling temps.

Just to be sure, more sun in August in Texas doesn't mean full sun on the southwest side of the house, but something less like bright sun filtered by a tree or another plant.

Thank you for the warm welcome! I am determined to learn to grow these, am thinking of buying the book Brugmansia and Datura: Angel's Trumpets and Thorn Apples. Does anyone recommend this book, or perhaps others?

I think that's one of the better books on brugs and dats.
