Split pea soup in the crock pot?

PKponder TX Z7B

I've never cooked split pea soup, but decided to use the last of the Christmas ham from the freezer. The bag of dried peas said that they only need to cook on the stovetop for 25 to 30 minutes. I cooked it on low in the crockpot for about 5 hours while I was busy working and the peas were not done at dinnertime. So, I cooked it all night. The darn peas are still hard this morning! Where did I go wrong? I checked the date and they are still current, not past their 'best by' date. Do they actually need boiling temps to cook?
