When I lived in really small efficiencies, I tried to find a way to delineate public and personal spaces even in the same room. Definitely get a futon (a nice one if you can afford it) as your couch so that you can accommodate a guest.

The nook will **barely** accommodate a twin bed according to the size shown. Between the closet and the bathroom it is almost a master suite and should have enough space to navigate(kinda). That would be my top choice as it is the most private placement for a bed.

I would put the futon facing right and put the tv / entertainment on the right wall. That will be your public entertainment space. Place the dining table right behind it but leave room to pull it out when entertaining. That would be your desk/etc as well so it will move between public and private depending.

Right now, everyone is getting rid of their big china cabinets on Craigslist. If you get two matching ones to flank the kitchen entry ($300 if you are selective), imagine the storage! Put one nice chairs(can be pulled to entertaining area if hosting /extra seat for dining) with a small table in the large window for reading. That gives you three zones in one room and a lot of flexibility.

People are also getting rid of their armoire tv cabinets as they as just mounting their flatscreens on the wall. Feel free to consider that as great storage as well especially if your taste is a bit less formal. There are some great pieces being thrown out. A few big, very functional TALL pieces can work better than a bunch of little stuff.

That's my first pass. One great thing about a small space is rearranging is a snap. :)

If you can get a hold of Southern Living Magazine's January issue, there is a spread about a studio apartment that reminds me of yours. The renter worked miracles in that place...so pretty!

You have great, light space, BTW. :) Much larger than most apartments.

I had a studio apartment for some time and loved it. I am not sure what you would do with that "nook." Maybe use it as a closet and storage? Get a futon or daybed you can use as a couch and a bed and enjoy your space!

I might look at a wallbed/Murphy bed. You'd have to measure for the doorways, but one might work in the Nook and would be folded up when you have guests or need to get into the bathroom and closet, if you look for a horizontal set up. Horizontal Murphy bed.

Do you think you need the doorway to the closet that opens into the main living area? I think I'd also consider putting a Murphy bed on that wall and just cover that doorway and use the closet entrance from the nook. Again, you could fold it up in the daytime and when you have guests. I've even seen them with a TV attached to the outside. Not good if you like to watch TV from bed, but great otherwise.

Some of them even have a fold down table you can use when the bed is up.

Also, if the nook is 6' long, then it's too short for a bed. Maybe built-in desk area?

You are right nosoccermom, I read the dimensions as 6'4" rather than 4'6". You can't fit a twin. :( That's what I get for posting right before bedtime.

I think the OP needs to decide if the room should pretend to be a living/dining during the day with hidden sleep (Murphy / futon) or if the bed should be part of the permanent arrangement (like aktillery's lovely example although if this is in the NE, your head might get cold surrounded by the window). This would then dictate what else can fit.

I agree the second closet door takes up wall space which is at a premium in this apartment.

I think knowing what is going to be used for sleeping will make a big difference. Will it be a pullout sofa? An actual bed? If it was me, I'd not want my bed to front and center all the time. I'd have to cover it up somehow, e.g. use a temporary wall of some sort? I like the link yayagal posted, it had a bed inside a huge shelving unit??? and a curtain across the end. Really cool. A Murphy bed would also hide it well. Some good thoughts here.

The problem with putting a murphy bed in this set-up is that there isn't wall space for it. The wall on the right side of the drawing is the obvious place for it, but I'm assuming that is a window.

Consider blocking off the entrance to the nook (simply, with a curtain on a tension rod) or usefully (bookcase inside the nook, to serve as nook storage). That gives a corner and an expanse of wall.

There are Murphy beds that are lateral, and beds that are over a loveseat (during the day the loveseat is against the wall with the bed folded up behind it. at night the bed comes down over the loveseat, the back of the loveseat folds down, too) But Murphy's can be expensive if you don't make them yourself. I'd go with a double bed in the corner between the kitchen and the closet door.

I don't imagine you'll entertain much, so I wouldn't even bother with a futon/loveseat/sofa. Needs too many friends to help move it! Just a comfy chair or two, an ottoman.

Do you watch tv? What do you use, cable? Broadcast? Streaming? You can probably put the tv anywhere you want, even move it around.

Wouldn't blocking the nook block access to the bathroom? Unless you go through the closet into the nook that way?

Rob, I'm thinking that you already go through the nook to get to the bathroom or the closet. So, OP could consider using the nook as a closet, and the closet as...well, as closet, because both will be used for storage anyway. Then they have a corner and wall for the bed.

You all are right, I didn't do the math on the length of a bed correctly. I still think I'd block the closet door with a wall/murphy bed instead of the nook door, though, so guests wouldn't have to go through all of my private space to access the bathroom.

I would get a sofa hide-a-bed or a chair hide-a-bed that makes into a single bed, that would fold up during the day. Put it in the window cove with a console table behind it for a lamp to sit on. Put a small table and chair in the corner (by kitchen and bath) and easy chair with an end table with floor lamp near the radiator I can see. Put your TV in front of the windows near entrance wall with a stand that has more storage. In the nook, on the back wall put a chest of drawers or even open shelves for more storage. A small coffee table that can be rolled out of the way when you make your bed would be good also. The shades and/or curtains you put on the window cove should be heavy enough for privacy.

Stephanie, could you post some more photos? Plans are sometimes deceiving and make the space look larger than it actually is. I think we could help you more with additional photos of the space. :)

After lightening your photo, I realize that you must have been standing either in the nook, or in the doorway to the nook, when taking the photo of the main room area. I can see the door jams to the opening of the nook.

With an apartment that small, I wouldn't be that worried about company. I for one would not want to fuss with putting my bed up and down each day. Get a daybed or futon and use as a couch and bed. Get a duvet to cover you and that's that. Or build a loft bed if the ceiling is high enough. I'd get one of those tables that is either round or square and had two fold down sides, so you can fold up when you need a work space or have company, and down when it is just you. I had one for years in my apartments, the extra chairs store under it, which is also nice. It comes in square, round and oval variations.

IKEA has a lot of ideas for built ins around beds that can be used for storage. Even carts with wheels that wheel over the bed so you can use a laptop while sitting in bed. With all that, you could easily have a "bed/couch/desk" in one. I have one in my current tiny apt. I have a twin bed in the tiny, tiny bedroom, but with only room for that bed and my clothes dressers in there, I was finding it getting cluttered with office work, books, laptop etc. that I was bringing in from my office/living room. I have finally started sleeping in the office/living room on the futon, and using the bedroom as a dressing room. Suits my lifestyle better. When company comes, I flip up the futon and take off the blankets.
