I don't think there are any roses that specifically susceptible to RRD. It's all roses. Multiflora is mentioned because it grows wild and no one supervises it, so the disease spreads. Same with Knockouts in commercial plantings. You are right to get rid of the multiflora. When you do plant your roses, you must be vigilant about checking for any signs of RRD. That is the best prevention. Have you had any RRD in your area?

Yes Buford is correct, All roses are susceptible too rrd. The problem as she said is the roses left unattended. Any rose that becomes infected and left in place becomes a reservoir. Any mite that feeds upon it will become infected. As the wind blows the eriophyid mite the disease is then spread too other roses.

All roses can get RRD, butI do think some roses are more susceptible or more attractive to the mites. Anything with multiflora in its genes, which is most hybrid masks, seems to catch RRD more easily. I had RRD come up a whole side of my property several years ago. I lost every single hybrid musk--about 12--and most of my polyanthas, another multiflora progeny. None of my Gallicas or rugosas caught and it only three Chinas.

What catsrose reports has happened to other folks in other states. In some situations, the HMusks are the first to contract RRD.
If HMusks are planted in very windy locations, as mine were, they didn't get RRD. Mine after ten years went down from Juglans toxicity, but the first nine years were very good. OTOH, my hill top is windy if there is any wind at all.

If I were replanting them (or had a need to have some specific color like the refined light yellow of Denae), I'd plant them freestanding and keep them pruned light and airy. Likewise the color pallet of Cornelia, or the vigor and magnificence of a Prosperity.

Thank you all for your help! I live in Connecticut and I recently read in the Connecticut gardener that rose rosette has appeared here. I'm not sure where in the state. I only have 2 hybrid musks on my list for my garden but they are Cornelia and Ghislaine de Feligonde. I had planned on growing them both up against a fence. I'm not sure if I'm going to take my chances or just pick other roses? If anyone has any more info on rose rosette in CT please let me know. There are really no other roses growing in my neighborhood.

It showed up here about 5 years ago. Here being about 20 miles west of Sharon. The odd thing was that it seemed to come from the north, not the south, and did not show up in the garden where I expected given the usual wind patterns. It seems to be fairly manageable so long as you pay attention to your roses. I don't know what the general landscape is where you are. We have a lot of wild multiflora that isn't particularly happy because of pH issues. So sick multiflora doesn't tend to survive and spread problems, but obediently dies off. Aside from the wild multiflora, most of the roses I've seen with RRD have been various wichurana crosses.

A theory about why KOs get RRD so much is that they seem to constantly be in flush and the mites like new growth. Maybe MF or hybrid musks share that trait?

What I know of Connecticut RRD is that it has been in the Elizabeth Park rose garden. Also a rosarian found it in central Massachusetts in one wild multiflora in a field that had never been sprayed (herbicides) and where there was no apparent source.

But do mites really have a choice of where they land. Since they can't fly and they are slow crawlers. Just trying to consider other factors. One would think they will feed where ever they land. In my yard KO has never been hit with rrd. The majority of my infections have been in roses where it is easy for the mites to be knocked out of the wind. Such as up against the house or situated under over hanging branches. Some of the rrd has been random droppings. Other than those the taller and fuller the rose the better the change a mite will land on them.
