Tall split upper cabinets - best design opinions?
Comments (5)In the last rendering, the split seems to line up with the hood mantle...Is that true or accurate? If so, I like it. I initially thought I liked the 2nd one with the top cabs getting the extra, because of the proportion/shape of the glass, but then I noticed the mantle and wasn't sure I liked the small door on the lower section in relation to the hood....See MoreOpinions on Horizontal Lift-Up Door Upper Cabinets?
Comments (12)I have 4 of them, and I find them very useful. I like the way they look, and the way they open means I can leave them open while cooking certain dishes and just take items from the cabinet as I work (pantry items). They're a great functional choice over a work surface. Two downsides--the hinges take up room inside the cabs and leave certain areas that can't be stuffed with stuff, and I have the Ferrari hinges (plus lots of extras that Ikea gave me when I complained). They do need adjustment and possibly replacement. I, too, have been caught holding a cabinet open with my own little head. mindstorm--is it a straight swap for the Blum Aventos? If you read this, can you provide more detailed information?...See MoreOpinions please: width of doors on 24 in. upper cabinet
Comments (21)Thanks again for the responses. Right now I am having trouble deciding. I will try the mock up tonight and see if that will help. Good idea. I have done drawings on graph paper and when I look at them I think that I slightly favor the look of the two doors bacause of the symetry. Holligator - Your door does not look big but I am worried that mine will actually be close to 22 inches because the cabinet is 24 inches wide. Love your cabinets by the way. Looking at literature I have from kraftmaid, shuller and diamond it seems that fewer companies make one door cabinets larger than 21 inches. Mine will be 24. Does anyone have a 24 inch cabinet with one door that they would be willing to post a picture of? Or a picture of a 24 inch cabinet with two doors? Just a thought. Comments (7)Wow, so many great thoughts. Thank you all. I'm glad that there seems to be somewhat of a concensus on the 36 inch cabinets, since that is what I have been leaning toward. While I certainly won't be able to reach the top shelf without a step stool (5'6" and getting shorter every year!), it would add additional storage and as several of you mentioned, it draws the eye up and accentuates the height. I will miss the display space on top of the cabinets, but I'm not very good at keeping those treasures clean..... Maybe a 36 in door with a bit of glass at the top of the door. Avesmore, there is a 33 inch wide cabinet between the corner cabinet and the window. I would love to enlarge the window; I've got a great view, though my budget probably won't allow for it and it would take away more storage space. You have to love the Tylenol orange counters,eh??! Bmorepanic: although DH would probably prefer a more modern look, the kitchen is open to the family room which has a somewhat traditional look, including crown molding and more of those beams. I am considering a simple shaker style in a warm wood; cherry? alder? But I like the idea of a "semi" coffered look, keeping the vaulted part of the ceiling, but adding more beams at the same level as the lower ceiling, perpendicular to the existing beam that runs through the kitchen. The vault would still be there adding height, but the beams below it would give continuity, architectural interest and give me a place to add lighting. Oooohh, the ideas are now coming! Re the hood, I have already purchased a DCS VS36 and a DCS 36 in all gas range. The hood is 18 inches tall, and will need something to top it off to bring it to the top the cabinets, not sure if a cabinet would be right (I guess there is not enough room if I use 36 inch cabinets) or a stainless extension to the top of the hood. Segbrown, you have a vaulted ceiling! I wish I had all that space! It is so dramatic. Thank you all again!!!...See Morepractigal
