fungus gnats and very little light
Comments (8)You are a brave soul! I have plenty of difficulty growing edibles in perfectly good conditions outside. I agree, you don't have enough light without adding some extra source, at least for plants that usually grow in full sun outside, such as sage. A product called mosquito dunks can help get rid of FG's if they show up again. Yes, they could have come from either of the sources you mentioned. Whenever there are moist organic bits decomposing in a pot, FG's would like to make their home there. I'm not sure about using this on edibles though. If someone doesn't pop in to confirm or deny, I'm sure the info's readily available by searching. Do you have any interest in ornamental plants? You might want to ask about the edibles in the veggie, herb, and/or container forums. There's definitely folks who visit house plant forum who are interested and experienced in the kind of gardening you're asking about, but I think your questions would get more responses on one of those other forums. There's also a forum for gardening under lights. If you poke around these other forums, you should get a feel for which one would be best to help you, or might find some answers to previous questions that help you out. Comments (1)This is a tough one. There are quite a few grasses, in a variety of small to medium sizes, which will do fine in shade or indirect light. Unfortunately, not as many are hardy to your zone, and most of them require moist fertile soil. If you can satisfy the moist fertile soil issue, check some of these: Calamagrostis arundinacea var. brachytricha Carex conica Carex glauca Carex muskingumensis Carex nigra Carex pendula Carex plantaginea Chasmanthium latifolium Deschampsia caespitosa Deschampsia flexuosa Elymus arenarius Festuca gigantea Festuca scoparia Hystrix patula Luzula nivea Luzula sylvatica Melica altissima Panicum clandestinum Phalaeiz arundinacea Sesleria caerulea A potential way to get more light into the area is to install some large white boulders. While they'll make some shade on the down-side, they'll reflect some light into the area....See MoreJarrahdale (upon sampling) has very little flavor
Comments (15)Hi Sue, I know you set your Jarrahdale free, but I thought I'd post pics of seeds from one I opened today. The light-colored seeds are from one that I picked early (maybe early August or something) because it was getting a soft spot on it. It wasn't very tasty. The darker seeds are from the smaller one (below) that's been sitting on the basement steps for the last few months. I didn't get to cook any of it tonight. Maybe tomorrow night. Do you remember if the seeds from yours were lighter or darker colored? Here's a pic of the color the fruits had ripened to. The smaller one set on in July or so, while the larger one probably set on at least a month later. It was on a vine that escaped to the alley, hence all the scarring. Here's how the smaller one looked on August 6. I couldn't resist posting it when I saw the same "freckles" and everything, lol....See MoreVery little kitchen backsplash, is that OK?
Comments (12)I think backsplashes are more about appearance than function. I think it's a good idea to have one behind the stove and behind the sink. Most of my past kitchens have had only a 3 inch backsplash, and it wasn't often that I needed to wipe something off the wall back there. And I'm a messy cook. I agree that they are often overwrought and can detract from the look of a kitchen. I think the window-as-bs idea is interesting as long as there's seating from which one can gaze out the window. If there isn't, then the only time anyone is going to look out the window is when they're bending over. A similar example is that art is usually hung at eye level unless it is near a seating area, in which case it can be OK to hang it at the seated person's eye level....See Moreparty_music50
