Win 7 update snafu????

Friday when I started up our computers at work, several of them indicated a problem with the updates they had received from Microsoft either earlier that morning or the day before (thursday the 14th). These computers are all Windows 7. They are not networked. That’s all I know about them.

The screens displayed a notice “failure configuring windows update. Reverting changes.” After a time, Windows did start up and seemed to function normally.

They are turned off at the end of the day. When I started them up the following morning, three of them displayed the same notice. Not sure about the others as they were turned on before I arrived. Again, after a time, they seemed to function normally.

Does anyone know what’s going on? I looked on google but all the references I saw were from months ago.

I did notice that one of the three still turned on at the end of the day was receiving more updates, but I am not able to check the results (not posting this from work).

I’m afraid to let my home pc (also Win 7) update until I know it’s safe to do so.

Thanks for any info anyone can provide.

You can run System Restore to a date previous to the troublesome update. Then restart. The update will download again and hopefully go smoothly this time.

Sometimes Updates may fail more than once. This could be the problem (why it's happened more than once).

Are all of these computers similar (same Manufacturer, Operating System, Software, etc...)? If so, it may be a problem on all of them because they are the same!

You're printing a document from Firefox? Please give more details. Is the printer set up as the default printer for this PC? If not, you need to establish a physically connection for the printer (to the PC, to the router, or is it wireless?) and then click on Start, Devices and Printers to establish the setup and have the printer recognized as the default device. You may need to reboot your PC, or restart whatever program you're printing from.

AZ, I understand what you are saying, but Emma makes a lot of sense. If users are not prepared for progress we would all still be using Commodores or in the least Win3.1. We have a whole bunch of Dell XP SP2 systems in our building. Six in our office alone. Ours are going to be replaced by a governmental entity due to security, non-MS software demand, and future anticipated expansion. You can bet many of the other offices will have to replace their systems via their budget as their offices have systems integrated for use with our data. And, we did survive without a burp when we switched from Win98 and Win2000 to WinXP. Bobbie, Hope you are sitting down. You know how I was dragged kicking and screaming into the post Win98 era as I loved my Win98 system. And, yes you know I love my Vista system even more and have defended it for all the bad publicity it received. My plans right now is to buy a entry to mid-level laptop with W8 just so I can play. See why I said I hope you were sitting down. Even though I think there is way too much going on now with the Internet, and can only guess as to what the future will bring we users have a choice. Be part of it or allow it to pass us by. Do I think everyone with a W7 should race out and purchase a W8? Of course not. However, two generations of O/S behind could become the future limit. DA

Thank you both so much. When I go back to work, I'll see what's what. I never thought about there being a difference in manufacturers. They are different, I think. Some Lenovio and some Dell. All running Win 7, though.

Then perhaps the other two were shut down before the updates had time to configure.
