If not, you need to establish a physically connection for the printer (to the PC, to the router, or is it wireless?) and then click on Start, Devices and Printers to establish the setup and have the printer recognized as the default device. We have a whole bunch of Dell XP SP2 systems in our building. Six in our office alone. Ours are going to be replaced by a governmental entity due to security, non-MS software demand, and future anticipated expansion. You can bet many of the other offices will have to replace their systems via their budget as their offices have systems integrated for use with our data. I had a similar problem with that update, it caused one of my PCs to freeze up and then not reboot correctly. It happens from time to time that an update can cause a hiccup. I don't know enough about it to know why. In my case, it just needed a "kick" - a safe mode reboot. I made no update setting changes, the PC proceeded with the update install and all is well. You might try doing that, and more than once if necessary, the problem should pass.
